Abstract

Systems and methods for noninvasive assessment of cardiac tissue properties and cardiac parameters using ultrasound techniques are disclosed. Determinations of myocardial tissue stiffness, tension, strain, strain rate, and the like, may be used to assess myocardial contractility, myocardial ischemia and infarction, ventricular filling and atrial pressures, and diastolic functions. Non-invasive systems in which acoustic techniques, such as ultrasound, are employed to acquire data relating to intrinsic tissue displacements are disclosed. Non-invasive systems in which ultrasound techniques are used to acoustically stimulate or palpate target cardiac tissue, or induce a response at a cardiac tissue site that relates to cardiac tissue properties and/or cardiac parameters are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A method for determining blood pressure comprising:

insonating a target tissue site within or on or in proximity to a blood vessel using an ultrasound source;

acquiring acoustic data from the target tissue site using an ultrasound detector over a plurality of cardiac cycles;

determining a geometrical property of the blood vessel based on the acoustic data acquired over a plurality of cardiac cycles;

assessing the pulsatility of the blood vessel based on the geometrical property of the blood vessel;

determining the arterial or venous blood pressure based on the pulsatility of the blood vessel over said plurality of cardiac cycles; and

outputting the arterial or venous blood pressure data for display.

2. A method of claim 1, additionally comprising inducing tissue displacement at the target tissue site by application of an acoustic radiation force and acquiring acoustic data relating to induced tissue displacement from the target tissue site.

3. A method of claim 1, comprising determining a geometrical property of the blood vessel based on the acoustic data, wherein the geometrical property is selected from the group consisting of:

changes in diameter, cross-sectional area, aspect ratio, rate of change of diameter, and velocity.

4. A method according to claim 1, wherein the pulsatility of the blood vessel is assessed using the oscillation rate of the blood vessel wall as an acoustic proxy for pulsatility.

5. A method according to claim 1, additionally comprising collecting synchronous Doppler flow measurements within the same vessel.

6. A method according to claim 5, comprising collecting synchronous Doppler flow measurements proximal and distal to the site where the geometrical property of the blood vessel is detected.

7. A method according to claim 1, wherein the acoustic data is acquired by detecting ultrasound signals in at least one of the following modes:

transmission;

reflection;

scatter;

emission;

backscatter;

echo;

Doppler;

color Doppler;

harmonic, subharmonic or super harmonic imaging;

a-mode;

m-mode; and

b-mode.

8. A method according to claim 1, additionally comprising performing an initial assessment using ultrasound detection techniques to locate a desired target tissue site.

9. A method according to claim 1, additionally comprising performing an initial assessment using Doppler flow measurements to locate a desired target tissue site.

10. A system for determining blood pressure comprising:

an ultrasound source configured to insonate a target tissue site within or on or in proximity to a blood vessel with ultrasound;

an ultrasound detector configured to acquire acoustic data from the target tissue site over a plurality of cardiac cycles;

a controller configured to determine a geometrical property of the blood vessel based on the acoustic data acquired over a plurality of cardiac cycles and determining the arterial or venous blood pressure based on changes in the geometrical property of the blood vessel over a plurality of cardiac cycles; and

a display component configured to display the arterial or venous blood pressure.

11. A system of claim 10, wherein the ultrasound detector acquires acoustic signals in at least one of the following detection modes:

transmission, reflection, scatter, emission, backscatter, echo, Doppler, color Doppler, harmonic, subharmonic or super harmonic imaging, a-mode, m-mode, and b-mode.
