Abstract

An on-line system and method for buyers and sellers of international container transportation services is disclosed. Specifically, the system offers importing and exporting customers the opportunity to request and select specific service patterns offered by participating carriers in the booking of full container shipments. The system includes user interfaces that allow a shipper to track and trace containers across multiple carriers and an event notifications system, which notifies the user when an event has or has not occurred.

Claims

1. A computer system comprising:

a server of a shipping intermediary including a computer storage, said server configured to generate and forward a user interface displayable on a display device of a computer of a shipper, said user interface for use by a shipper for obtaining container shipping information stored in the computer storage, said container shipping information regarding multiple bookings originating from multiple carriers, said user interface including;

a first region configured to receive identification information from the shipper, said identification information relating to a booking that was originally made directly between said shipper and a carrier; and

,

a second region configured to display results matching said identification information, said results including container shipping information regarding said booking, said container shipping information including status information relating to said booking,

wherein said server is further configured to receive and store in said computer storage status information relating to said booking from said carrier prior to first receiving said identification information from the shipper via the first region, configured to receive said identification information from the shipper via the first region, configured to search said computer storage for one or more bookings based on said identification information, and configured to forward said search results for display in said second region.

The computer system of claim 1, wherein said first region of the user interface includes a third region, said third region configured to receive, from the shipper, identification information comprising at least one of a booked vessel identifier, a booked voyager identifier, a latest vessel identifier, a latest voyage identifier, cargo description information, and booking status information, wherein said server is further adapted to search said computer storage for one or more bookings based on said identification information received via the third region.

The computer system of claim 1, wherein said first region of the user interface includes a third region, said third region configured to receive, from the shipper, identification information comprising at least one of a booking creation date, a carrier, a cargo type, and an event, wherein said server is further adapted to search said computer storage for one or more bookings based on said identification information received via the third region.

The computer system of claim 1, wherein said first region of the user interface includes a third region, said third region configured to receive, from the shipper, identification information comprising container location information, wherein said server is further adapted to search said computer storage for one or more bookings based on said container location information.

5. The computer system of claim 1, wherein the shipper accesses shipping information from multiple carriers by accessing said user interface.

The computer system of claim 1, wherein said first region of the user interface includes a third region, said third region configured to receive, from the shipper, identification information comprising at least one bill of lading number and a booking number, wherein said server is further adapted to search said computer storage for one or more bookings based on said identification information received via the third region.

7. The computer system of claim 6, wherein said third region of the user interface is configured to receive a container number.

The computer system of claim 1, wherein said first region of the user interface includes a third region, said third region configured to receive, from the shipper, identification information comprising a booking number, a bill of lading number, a container number, a booked vessel identifier, and a booked voyage identifier, wherein said server is further configured to search said computer storage for one or more bookings based on said identification information received via the third region.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the server is further adapted to perform periodic polling of the carrier prior to receiving said identification information from the shipper via the first region.

The system of claim 1, wherein said booking corresponds to a single container being transported by multiple carriers, each carrier responsible for a leg of the trip, and wherein said second region is configured to simultaneously display status information received from the multiple carriers relating to the single container.

11. A computer system comprising:

a server of a shipping intermediary including a computer storage, said server configured to generate and forward a user interface configured to display on a display of a computer of a shipper, said user interface configured to be used by a shipper for obtaining container shipping information stored in the computer storage, said container shipping information regarding multiple bookings originating from multiple carriers, said user interface including;

a first region configured to receive identification information from the shipper, said identification information relating to a booking that was originally made directly between said shipper and said intermediary, where said intermediary exchanges said booking with a carrier; and

,

a second region configured to display results matching said identification information, said results including container shipping information regarding said booking, said container shipping information including status information relating to said booking,

wherein said server is further configured to receive and store in said computer storage status information relating to said booking from said carrier prior to first receiving said identification information from the shipper via the first region, configured to receive said identification information from the shipper via the first region, configured to search said computer storage for one or more bookings based on said identification information, and configured to forward said search results for display in said second region.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the server is further adapted to perform periodic polling of the carrier prior to receiving said identification information from the shipper via the first region.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein said booking corresponds to a single container being transported by multiple carriers, each carrier responsible for a leg of the trip, and wherein said second region is configured to simultaneously display status information received from the multiple carriers relating to the single container.
