1. A method of providing information for a network device, comprising:
- receiving a simple object access protocol (SOAP) request at a network device for information; and
in response to receiving the request, transmitting a reply confirming that the network device includes a network device management tool, the network device management tool being configured to include in the reply an operational status of the network device, an Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with the network device, and an identity of a manufacturer of the network device, the reply being provided as an XML block such that specified information in the reply is included as a series of tagged values, the network device management tool being configured to provide a network map of network connections in a local area network, wherein the map further includes an identification of additional devices connected to the local area network and their respective operational status.

Variations of the network device management tool may alternately or additionally allow a client to deliver information to the network device, such as instructions to control the operation of the network device. a memory containing one or more setting values associated with the operation of the network device; and a network management tool configured to receive simple object access protocol (SOAP) requests from a client to retrieve existing information from the memory, retrieve the existing information from the memory, provide a reply to the requests with the existing information retrieved from the memory, the network device management tool being configured to include in the reply an operational status of the network device, an Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with the network device, and an identity of a manufacturer of the network device, the reply being provided as an XML block such that specified information in the reply is included as a series of tagged values, and provide a network map of network connections in a local area network, wherein the map further includes an identification of additional devices connected to the local area network and their respective operational status. - View Dependent Claims (19)

20. A system for configuring a network device for a network comprising:
a network device including a network device management tool being configured to receive an HTTP GET request from a remote computing device that inquires as to whether the network device includes the network device management tool, the network device management tool being further configured to include, in a reply to the remote computing device, an operational status of the network device, an Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with the network device, and an identity of a manufacturer of the network device, the reply being provided as an XML block such that specified information in the reply is included as a series of tagged values, the network device management tool being configured to provide a network map of network connections in a local area network, wherein the map further includes an identification of additional devices connected to the local area network and their respective operational status.
