Abstract

A method for electrode-based patterning of thin film, self-assembled nanoparticles. The method uses a variety of types of thin films and electrodes.

Claims

1. A method for producing a patterned thin film comprising nanoparticles, the method comprising the steps of:

providing an electrode supported on a substrate;

providing a fluid containing nanoparticles capable, upon heating, of binding to the electrode, said fluid being adjacent to the electrode;

bringing said nanoparticles in contact with said electrode;

heating the electrode thereby binding said nanoparticles to the electrode, thus forming a patterned thin film having the shape of the electrode; and

applying a potential to the electrode in an amount sufficient to cause separation of the patterned thin film from the adjacent electrode.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the electrode is a platinum electrode.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterned thin film is water permeable.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterned thin film is a grown film.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterned thin film is a spun-on film.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterned thin film is planar.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterned thin film comprises stacked nanoparticles.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterned thin film is a self-assembled film.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterned thin film is flexed prior to separation.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the patterned thin film is flexed via an electro-osmotic force.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the patterned thin film is an electrophoretically deposited, self-assembled film.
