Abstract

An improved field emission system and method is provided that involves field emission structures having electric or magnetic field sources. The magnitudes, polarities, and positions of the magnetic or electric field sources are configured to have desirable correlation properties, which may be in accordance with a code. The correlation properties correspond to a desired spatial force function where spatial forces between field emission structures correspond to relative alignment, separation distance, and the spatial force function.

Claims

1. A method for producing a two dimensional code, said method comprising the steps of:

a. selecting a 1×

n code having desired correlation characteristics, said 1×

n code having n code elements CE_i, where i=1 to n;

b. producing, using said 1×

n code, n rows R_i, where i=1 to n; and

c. combining the n rows into an n×

n matrix of n columns and n rows to produce an n×

n code corresponding to a spatial force function when said n×

n code is used to define a plurality of field emission sources of a first field emission structure having a first orientation relative to a second field emission structure said n×

n code corresponding to a code modulo of said first field emission structure and a code modulo of said second field emission structure, said n×

n code defining a peak spatial force corresponding to substantial alignment of said code modulo of said first field emission structure with said code modulo of said second field emission structure, said n×

n code also defining a plurality of off peak spatial forces corresponding to a plurality of different misalignments of said code modulo of said first field emission structure and said code modulo of said second field emission structure, said plurality of off peak spatial forces having a largest off peak spatial force, said largest off peak spatial force being less than half of said peak spatial force.

2. The method of claim 1, where the n×

3. The method of claim 1 where the rows 1 to n of the n×

n matrix are reversed.

4. The method of claim 1 where the columns 1 to n of the n×

n code comprises at least one of a Barker code, a Gold code, a Kasami sequence, a hyperbolic congruential code, a quadratic congruential code, a linear congruential code, a Welch-Costas array code, a Golumb-Costas array code, a pseudorandom code, a chaotic code, an Optimal Golomb Ruler code, a deterministic code, or a designed code.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein each row R_i equals the 1×

n code.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein row R₁ equals the 1×

n code and for the remaining rows R_i equals the ith code element, CE_i, of the 1×

n code through the nth code element, CE_n, of the 1×

n code plus the code elements of the 1×

n code prior to the ith code element, CE₁ through CE<sub>i−

1</sub>.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein the rows of the n×

n matrix are ordered sequentially such that each row, R_i, begins with the ith code element, CE_i, of the 1×

n code.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein the rows of the n×

n matrix are reordered in an order other than which they were produced.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the rows of the n×

n matrix are reordered randomly.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

producing a second n×

n code that is complementary to the n×

n matrix.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

producing a second n×

n code that is anti-complementary to the n×

n matrix.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using said n×

n code to define positions and polarities of field emission sources of said first field emission structure.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

using said n×

n code to define positions and polarities of field emission sources of said second first field emission structure that is complementary to said first field emission structure.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

using said n×

n code to define positions and polarities of field emission sources of said second first field emission structure that is anti-complementary to said first field emission structure.
