1. An obstruction detection apparatus for a bed, the obstruction detection apparatus comprising:
- a sensor apparatus coupled to a second frame of a bed having a first frame, a second frame coupled to the first frame, and an adjustable-height frame coupled to the second frame, the sensor apparatus being configured to generate an output signal during downwardly movement of the adjustable-height frame, andcontrol circuitry configured to monitor the output signal from the sensor apparatus, determine whether the output signal is indicative of contact by the adjustable-height frame with an obstruction during downwardly movement of the adjustable-height frame, generate a control signal including instructions to stop movement of the adjustable-height frame if contact by the adjustable-height frame with an obstruction is detected, and send the control signal to the bed.

Abstract
An apparatus is provided for detecting the presence of an obstruction with respect to a height-adjustable bed. The apparatus includes sensors coupled to the bed. At least one of the sensors has an output signal which is variable in response to changes in a weight applied to the support surface. The apparatus also includes a controller having inputs configured to receive the output signals from the sensor or sensors. The controller is configured to monitor the output signals, and to provide an indication of the presence of an obstruction with respect to a change in position of the bed.

15. An obstruction detection apparatus for a bed, the obstruction detection apparatus comprising:
-
a first sensor coupled to a first frame portion of a bed, the first sensor being configured to generate a first output signal while a movable portion of the bed is moving downwardly and to generate a second output signal, and a first controller configured to receive the first and second outputs signals from the first sensor, compare the first output signal to the second output signal, determine whether an obstruction is present relative to the movable portion of the bed based on the comparison between the first and second output signals, generate a control signal if the obstruction is present, and send the control signal to a second controller operably coupled to the movable portion of the bed to stop movement of the movable portion of the bed. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20)

21. An obstruction detection apparatus for a bed, the obstruction detection apparatus comprising:
-
a plurality of load cells coupled proximate corners of a bed, the plurality of load cells being configured to produce a plurality of output signals indicative of weight applied to the bed, and a controller configured to receive the plurality of output signals, analyze the output signals over time, determine whether a first condition relative to the bed has occurred by comparing a weight change to a first predetermined value, determine whether a second condition has occurred relative to the bed by comparing a weight change to a second predetermined value, determine whether a third condition has occurred relative to the bed by comparing a weight change to a third predetermined value, determine whether a fourth condition has occurred relative to the bed by comparing a weight change to a fourth predetermined value, generating an alert signal if at least one of the first, second, third, and fourth conditions has occurred, and communicating the alert signal to a caregiver. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23, 24, 25)
