Abstract

A method, apparatus and recording medium for managing defects are discussed. According to an embodiment, the method includes allocating at least one spare area to the recording medium, and at least one temporary defect management area to the spare area when a plurality of temporary defect management areas are to be separately provided; recording defect management information on a first temporary defect management area; and recording defect management information on a second temporary defect management area after the first temporary defect management area is full, the second temporary defect management area being allocated to the spare area.

Claims

1. A method of managing defects on an optical recording medium, the method comprising:

allocating at least one spare area to the recording medium, and at least one temporary defect management area to the spare area when a plurality of temporary defect management areas are to be separately provided;

recording defect management information on a first temporary defect management area;

recording defect management information on a second temporary defect management area after the first temporary defect management area is full, the second temporary defect management area being allocated to the spare area; and

recording the defect management information included in at least one of the first and second temporary defect management areas to at least one defect management area when the recording medium is finalized.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first temporary defect management area is allocated to a lead-in area of the recording medium.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one spare area includes an inner spare area and an outer spare area.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the first temporary defect management area is allocated to a lead-in area, and the second temporary defect management area is allocated to the outer spare area.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the first temporary defect management area is allocated to the inner spare area, and the second temporary defect management area is allocated to the outer spare area.

6. An apparatus of managing defects on an optical recording medium, the apparatus comprising:

a recording/reproducing device configured to

allocate at least one spare area to the recording medium, and at least one temporary defect management area to the spare area when a plurality of temporary defect management areas are to be separately provided,

record defect management information on a first temporary defect management area,

record defect management information on a second temporary defect management area after the first temporary defect management area is full, the second temporary defect management area being allocated to the spare area, and

record the defect management information included in at least one of the first and second temporary defect management areas to at least one defect management area when the recording medium is finalized.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the first temporary defect management area is allocated to a lead-in area of the recording medium.

8. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the at least one spare area includes an inner spare area and an outer spare area.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the first temporary defect management area is allocated to a lead-in area, and the second temporary defect management area is allocated to the outer spare area.

10. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the first temporary defect management area is allocated to the inner spare area, and the second temporary defect management area is allocated to the outer spare area.

11. A recording medium, comprising:

at least one spare area for managing defects on the recording medium; and

a plurality of temporary defect management areas for storing defect management information, at least one temporary defect management area allocated to the spare area when the plurality of temporary defect management areas are to be separately provided,

wherein the plurality of temporary defect management areas include a first temporary defect management area and a second temporary defect management area according to a use order, the first temporary defect management area being firstly used and the second temporary defect management area being used after the first temporary defect management area is full, the second temporary defect management area being allocated to the spare area, and

wherein at least one defect management area being used for storing the defect management information included in at least one of the first and second temporary defect management areas when the recording medium is finalized.

12. The recording medium of claim 11, wherein the first temporary defect management area is allocated to a lead-in area of the recording medium.

13. The recording medium of claim 11, wherein the at least one spare area includes an inner spare area and an outer spare area.

14. The recording medium of claim 13, wherein the first temporary defect management area is allocated to a lead-in area, and the second temporary defect management area is allocated to the outer spare area.

15. The recording medium of claim 13, wherein the first temporary defect management area is allocated to the inner spare area, and the second temporary defect management area is allocated to the outer spare area.
