Abstract

A biopsy device includes a probe portion and a holster portion that may be coupled together. The probe portion includes a rotatable tissue sample holder that is configured to hold tissue samples. One or more portions of the tissue sample holder may be formed of a transparent or translucent material, e.g., a translucent manifold and shaft, transparent or translucent tissue sample trays, and a transparent cup that is external to the manifold and trays. The holster portion may include one or more sources of light, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs). The LEDs may be configured to illuminate at least a portion of the tissue sample holder, such as to facilitate viewing of tissue samples in the tissue sample holder. For instance, one LED may be aligned with the shaft of the tissue sample holder, while two additional LEDs may be positioned on both sides of the shaft.

Claims

1. A biopsy device configured to obtain tissue samples from a patient, wherein the biopsy device comprises:

(a) a cannula having a tissue piercing tip;

(b) a cutter translatable relative to the cannula, wherein the cutter defines an axis; and

(c) a tissue sample holder configured to hold tissue samples severed by the cutter and communicated proximally through the cutter, wherein the tissue sample holder comprises;

(i) a plurality of discrete tissue sample compartments, and

(ii) a rotatable manifold defining an axis, wherein the tissue sample compartments are external to the rotatable manifold, wherein the rotatable manifold comprises a plurality of longitudinal passages generally parallel to the tissue sample compartments, and a plurality of radial passages generally perpendicular to the longitudinal passages, wherein each of the longitudinal passages align with a portion of a corresponding radial passage of the plurality of radial passages, wherein the longitudinal passages are operably configured to transmit a vacuum to the radial passages, wherein the radial passages are operably configured to receive the vacuum from the longitudinal passages and to transmit the vacuum through the tissue sample compartments to the cutter to transport the severed tissue sample proximally to a selected tissue sample compartment.

2. The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the axis defined by the cutter passes through at least a portion of the tissue sample holder.

3. The biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the tissue sample holder further comprises a cup, wherein the cup is external relative to the rotatable manifold, wherein the tissue sample compartments are internal relative to the cup.

4. The biopsy device of claim 1, further comprising a probe body, wherein the cannula extends from the probe body.

5. The biopsy device of claim 4, wherein at least a portion of the tissue sample holder is removably secured relative to the probe body.

6. The biopsy device of claim 4, further comprising a holster portion, wherein the probe body is removably secured relative to the holster portion.

7. The biopsy device of claim 6, further comprising one or more light sources, wherein at least one of the one or more light sources is operable to illuminate at least a portion of the tissue sample holder, wherein the one or more light sources are located within the holster portion.

The biopsy device of claim 7, wherein the one or more light sources are located at a proximal end of the holster portion, wherein the proximal end of the holster portion is furthest from the tissue piercing tip of the cannula, wherein the holster portion further comprises one or more light sources located at a distal end of the holster portion, wherein the distal end of the holster portion is nearest to the tissue piercing tip of the cannula.

9. The biopsy device of claim 8, wherein the one or more light sources located at the distal end of the holster portion comprise a pair of light sources located proximate to an interface between the cannula and the probe body.

10. The biopsy device of claim 7, wherein the one or more light sources comprise three light sources located at a proximal end of the holster portion.

11. The biopsy device of claim 1, further comprising one or more light sources, wherein at least one of the one or more light sources is operable to illuminate at least a portion of the tissue sample holder.

12. The biopsy device of claim 11, wherein the tissue sample holder comprises:

(i) a translucent rotatable manifold defining an axis, and

(ii) a transparent cup external to the manifold.

13. The biopsy device of claim 12, wherein a first light source of the one or more light sources is positioned substantially along the axis defined by the manifold.

14. The biopsy device of claim 13, wherein a second light source of the one or more light sources is positioned lateral to the axis defined by the manifold.

15. The biopsy device of claim 13, wherein the first light source is configured to illuminate the rotatable manifold.

16. The biopsy device of claim 11, wherein the one or more light sources are further configured to illuminate the rotatable manifold.

17. The biopsy device of claim 11, wherein one of the one or more light sources is located at a three o'"'"'clock or nine o'"'"'clock position relative to the axis defined by the rotatable manifold.

18. The biopsy device of claim 11, wherein the one or more light sources comprise at least one light emitting diode.

19. A biopsy device configured to obtain tissue samples from a patient, wherein the biopsy device comprises:

(a) a cannula;

(b) a cutter translatable relative to the cannula;

(c) a rotatable tissue sample holder configured to hold tissue samples severed by the cutter and communicated proximally through the cutter, wherein the rotatable tissue sample holder defines a plurality of discrete tissue sample compartments, wherein the tissue sample holder further comprises a manifold defining an axis, wherein the tissue sample compartments are external to the manifold, wherein the manifold is configured to communicate vacuum from a vacuum source through a longitudinal passage to a radial passage, and through the radial passage to at least one of the tissue sample compartments located external to the manifold;

(d) a probe body, wherein the cannula extends from the probe body; and

(e) one or more light sources, wherein at least one of the one or more light sources is operable to illuminate at least one of the tissue sample compartments.

20. A biopsy device configured to obtain tissue samples from a patient, wherein the biopsy device comprises:

(a) a cannula;

(b) a cutter translatable relative to the cannula;

(c) a tissue sample holder configured to hold tissue samples severed by the cutter in one of a plurality of discrete tissue sample compartments, wherein at least a portion of the tissue sample holder comprises a substantially transparent outer portion and a substantially translucent or substantially transparent inner portion, wherein the tissue sample holder further comprises;

(i) a rotatable manifold internal to the tissue sample compartments, wherein the rotatable manifold comprises a plurality of longitudinal passages and a plurality of radial passages, wherein the longitudinal passages are aligned with a portion of the radial passages, wherein the radial passages are operably configured to receive a vacuum from the longitudinal passages, and

(ii) one or more tissue sample trays defining the plurality of tissue sample compartments, wherein the one or more tissue sample trays are configured to communicate the vacuum from the radial passages to at least one of the tissue sample compartments;

(d) a probe body, wherein the cannula extends from the probe body; and

(e) one or more light sources, wherein at least one of the one or more light sources is operable to illuminate at least a portion of the tissue sample holder.
