Abstract

A combined rf-only/FAIMS apparatus is disclosed for use in mass spectrometry and other applications. The disclosed apparatus includes a plurality of curved electrodes arranged around a central ion transmission channel. FAIMS functionality is removed electronically when not desired by application of radio frequency (rf) waveforms to the curved electrodes.

Claims

1. An apparatus for transmitting ions in the gas phase, the apparatus comprising:

an electrode assembly comprising at least four electrodes defining an ion transmission channel therebetween, the ion transmission channel extending along a curved path between first and second opposite ends of the electrode assembly and being bounded between opposing pairs of the at least four electrodes; and

,

an electrical controller that is selectably switchable between a first operating mode and a second operating mode during ion transmission, the electrical controller in communication with at least one of the at least four electrodes for establishing first electric field conditions within the ion transmission channel for separating ions according to the FAIMS principle when operating in the first operating mode and for establishing second electric field conditions within the ion transmission channel for transmitting ions using the principle of an rf-only ion guide device when operating in the second operating mode.

2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the curved path is a continuously curving path.

3. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the continuously curving path defines a portion of a circle having a radius R.

An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the at least four electrodes comprise a first electrode having a first electrode surface and a second electrode having a second electrode surface that is disposed in a spaced-apart facing relationship with the first electrode surface, the first electrode surface defining a portion of a circle having a radius R₁ and the second electrode surface defining a portion of a circle having a radius R₂, wherein R₁<

R₂.

5. An apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the at least four electrodes comprise a third electrode having a third electrode surface and a fourth electrode having a fourth electrode surface that is disposed in a spaced-apart facing relationship with the third electrode surface.

An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein when viewed in cross-section, the first and second electrodes are spaced-apart along a first direction and the third and fourth electrodes are spaced-apart along a second direction that is approximately normal to the first direction, such that the ion transmission channel is bounded on four sides thereof by one of the first electrode surface, the second electrode surface, the third electrode surface, and the fourth electrode surface.

An apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the ion transmission channel is approximately rectangular in shape when viewed in a cross-section taken in a plane that is normal to each of the first electrode surface, the second electrode surface, the third electrode surface and the fourth electrode surface.

8. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the rate of curvature of the ion transmission channel varies between the first and second opposite ends of the electrode assembly.

An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein two of the at least four electrodes are segmented electrodes, each one of the segmented electrodes comprising a plurality of electrode segments, each electrode segment having a generally planar surface facing toward the ion transmission channel, and the electrode segments of each of the segmented electrodes being arranged end-to-end in a direction along the ion transmission channel so as to define, in aggregate, an approximately smoothly curving electrode surface facing toward the ion transmission channel.

10. An apparatus for transmitting ions in the gas phase, the apparatus comprising:

a first electrode defining a first arc-shaped electrode surface and a second electrode defining a second arc-shaped electrode surface, the second arc-shaped electrode surface being spaced-apart from and facing the first arc-shaped electrode surface so as to define therebetween a generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel;

a third electrode defining a third electrode surface and a fourth electrode defining a fourth electrode surface, the fourth electrode surface being spaced-apart from and facing the third electrode surface, the third electrode and the fourth electrode being disposed one each adjacent opposite edges of the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel; and

,

an electrical controller that is selectably switchable between a first operating mode and a second operating mode, the electrical controller in communication with at least one of the first, second, third and fourth electrodes for establishing first electric field conditions within the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel for separating ions according to the FAIMS principle when operating in the first operating mode and for establishing second electric field conditions within the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel for transmitting ions using the principle of an rf-only ion guide device when operating in the second operating mode.

An apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the electrical controller comprises a radio-frequency asymmetric waveform (DV) potential source and a direct current compensation (CV) potential source, for providing a predetermined combination of DV and CV potentials for establishing the first electric field conditions within the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel when operating in the first operating mode.

An apparatus according to claim 11, wherein the electrical controller comprises a symmetric alternating current (AC) potential source and a direct current (DC) potential source, for providing a predetermined combination of AC and DC potentials for establishing the second electric field conditions within the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel when operating in the second operating mode.

13. An apparatus according to claim 12, wherein the electrical controller comprises a plurality of separate electrical controllers.

14. An apparatus according to claim 12, wherein the CV potential source and the DC potential source are a same potential source.

An apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the first and second electrodes are spaced-apart along a first direction and the third and fourth electrodes are spaced-apart along a second direction that is approximately normal to the first direction, such that the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel is bounded on four sides thereof by one of the first electrode surface, the second electrode surface, the third electrode surface, and the fourth electrode surface.

16. An apparatus according to claim 15, wherein the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel defines a continuously curving ion flow path between an ion entrance end and an ion outlet end thereof.

An apparatus according to claim 16, comprising a plurality of lateral segment electrodes including a first lateral segment electrode and a second lateral segment electrode disposed one each adjacent opposite edges of the first arc-shaped electrode surface, and including a third lateral segment electrode and a fourth lateral segment electrode disposed one each adjacent opposite edges of the second arc-shaped electrode surface, the first, second, third and fourth lateral segment electrodes extending between the ion entrance end and the ion outlet end of the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel.

18. An apparatus according to claim 16, wherein a spacing between the first and second electrode surfaces along the first direction is approximately the same as a spacing between the third and fourth electrode surfaces along the second direction.

19. An apparatus according to claim 17, wherein the third electrode is disposed between the first lateral segment electrode and the third lateral segment electrode, and wherein the fourth electrode is disposed between the second lateral segment electrode and the fourth lateral segment electrode.

An apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the third electrode surface is approximately parallel to the fourth electrode surface, and wherein the third electrode and the fourth electrode are shaped to conform to a curvature of the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel as viewed in a cross-section taken in a plane that is parallel to both the third electrode surface and the fourth electrode surface and that is normal to both the first arc-shaped electrode surface and the second arc-shaped electrode surface.

21. An apparatus according to claim 10, comprising a generally straight ion transmission channel portion disposed adjacent to and in communication with the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel, the generally straight ion transmission channel portion being defined between opposing pairs of generally planar electrode surfaces.

22. An apparatus for transmitting ions in the gas phase, the apparatus comprising:

an electrode assembly, comprising;

a first electrode having a first electrode surface defining an arc segment of a circle of radius R₁ and extending along an arc segment length L₁;

a second electrode having a second electrode surface defining an arc segment of a circle of radius R₂ and extending along an arc segment length L₂, wherein R₁<

L₂ and wherein the first electrode surface is disposed in a spaced-apart facing relationship relative to the second electrode surface so as to define a generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel therebetween; and

two edge-electrodes disposed one each adjacent opposite sides of the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel and spaced-apart one from the other in a direction that is normal to the direction of spacing between the first electrode and the second electrode; and

,

an electrical controller that is selectably switchable between a first operating mode and a second operating mode during ion transmission, the electrical controller in communication with the electrode assembly for establishing first electric field conditions within the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel for separating ions according to the FAIMS principle when operating in the first operating mode and for establishing second electric field conditions within the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel for transmitting ions using the principle of an rf-only ion guide device when operating in the second operating mode.

23. An apparatus according to claim 22, wherein circle of radius R₁ and the circle of radius R₂ are concentric cirles.

24. An apparatus according to claim 22, wherein each one of the two edge-electrodes is shaped to conform to a curvature of the generally arc-shaped ion transmission channel as viewed in a cross-section taken in a plane that is parallel to facing surfaces of the two edge electrodes and that is normal to both the first electrode surface and the second electrode surface.
