Abstract

A piezoelectric ultracapacitor is disclosed capable of converting the kinetic energy of ordinary motion into an electrical potential. Multiple piezoelectric ultracapacitors may be configured together to provide an increased output voltage and various materials may advantageously be used. The piezoelectric ultracapacitor of the present invention may be used in various contexts, including power generation, switching and control and memory. An elastomeric piezoelectric ultracapacitor, along with methods of making and operating such a device, is also disclosed. The elastomeric piezoelectric ultracapacitor utilizes the voltage generation capabilities of a piezoelectric ultracapacitor and the generator mode operation of an elastomer actuator, combined and cooperating in novel ways, to provide improved energy generation capabilities.

Claims

1. An ultracapacitor comprising a piezoelectric material and an electrolyte between a first electrode and a second electrode, wherein said piezoelectric material is coupled to said electrodes so as to emit from said electrodes a voltage generated by said piezoelectric material.

2. The ultracapacitor of claim 1 wherein said electrolyte comprises a gel electrolyte and said piezoelectric element is coupled to a first layer of said gel electrolyte, said first layer coupled to said first electrode, and said piezoelectric element electrically coupled to said first electrode.

3. The ultracapacitor of claim 2 wherein said piezoelectric element is further coupled to a second layer of said gel electrolyte, said second layer coupled to said second electrode, and said piezoelectric element electrically coupled to said second electrode.

4. The ultracapacitor of claim 3 wherein said first electrode comprises a first means for coupling to said first electrolyte layer and said second electrode comprises a second means for coupling to said second electrolyte layer.

5. The ultracapacitor of claim 3 wherein one of said electrical couplings consists of a metal conductor.

6. The ultracapacitor of claim 3 wherein one of said electrical couplings comprises a semiconductor device.

7. The ultracapacitor of claim 2 wherein said gel electrolyte is a polymer gel electrolyte.

8. The ultracapacitor of claim 2 wherein said gel electrolyte is a polymer gel electrolyte comprising an ionic salt selected from the group consisting essentially of LiAsF6, LiPF6, LiBF4, LiC1O4.

9. The ultracapacitor of claim 2 wherein said gel electrolyte is a polymer gel electrolyte formed from a plurality of ionic salts each selected from the group consisting essentially of LiAsF6, LiPF6, LiBF4, LiC1O4.

10. The ultracapacitor of claim 2 wherein said electrical coupling consists of a metal conductor.

11. The ultracapacitor of claim 2 wherein said electrical coupling comprises a semiconductor device.

12. A ultracapacitor comprising a plurality of electrodes, an electrolyte and a piezoelectric element located between said electrodes, wherein said piezoelectric element is configured to generate electrical current via said electrodes.

13. The ultracapacitor of claim 12 wherein said electrolyte is comprised of a gel electrolyte material.

14. The ultracapacitor of claim 12 wherein said electrolyte is comprised of a polymer gel electrolyte material.

15. The ultracapacitor of claim 14 further comprising a second layer of a gel electrolyte material coupled to a second electrode and to said second surface of said piezoelectric element.

16. The ultracapacitor of claim 12, wherein said electrolyte includes a first layer of a gel electrolyte material which is coupled to a first surface of said piezoelectric element and to a first electrode, and wherein a second surface of said piezoelectric element is coupled by an electrical connection to said first electrode.

17. An ultracapacitor comprising first and second electrodes, a piezoelectric element and an electrolyte located between said electrodes, wherein said capacitor is configured to emit from said electrodes a voltage generated by said piezoelectric element.
