1. A transponder for a HF communication system, the transponder comprising:
- an antenna for receiving high-frequency carrier signals, the antenna having reflective characteristics;
a transponder operational unit for providing an output to place said transponder in a first operating mode or a second test mode as a function of said output,a control unit for providing at least one transponder-specific parameter, which provide information relating to the quality, performance, or functionality of the transponder when said transponder is operating in said second test mode; and
a modulator being controlled by the control unit, the modulator altering the reflective characteristics of the antenna in accordance with the at least one transponder-specific parameter,wherein the transponder, when operating in said first operating mode transmits data between a base station and the transponder, andwherein the transponder, when operating in said second test mode, transmits the at least one transponder-specific parameter to the base station, wherein in said second test mode the reflective characteristics of the antenna are modified thereby providing said base station with the information relating to the quality, performance, or functionality of the transponder.

26. A transponder for a HF communication system, the transponder comprising:
-
an antenna for receiving high-frequency carrier signals, the antenna having reflective characteristics; a control unit for providing transponder-specific parameters; and a modulator being controlled by the control unit, the modulator altering the reflective characteristics of the antenna in accordance with at least one of said transponder-specific parameters, and thereby outputting signals indicating said transponder-specific parameters to a base station for evaluating the quality, performance, or functionality of the transponder, wherein the modulator is a backscatter modulator or a load modulator, and has a capacitively variable load coupled to the antenna, and wherein a backscatter cross-section of the antenna can be changed by varying this load, wherein the capacitive load is a micromechanical component whose capacitance varies as a function of a change in an ambient temperature and/or ambient pressure of the transponder.

27. A transponder for a HF communication system including a transmitting/receiving device functioning as a test circuit for communicating transponder-specific parameters to a base unit, the transponder comprising an antenna for receiving high-frequency carrier signals, the antenna having reflective characteristics;
- and
wherein said transmitting/receiving device functioning as a test circuit includes; a control unit for providing transponder-specific parameters; and a modulator being controlled by the control unit, the modulator altering the reflective characteristics of the antenna in accordance with at least one of said transponder-specific parameters, whereby the transponder specific parameters are communicated back to said base station, and thereby providing an indication to said base station for evaluating the quality, performance, or functionality of the transponder.
