Instrument for guiding stage apparatus and method for using same
First Claim
1. An apparatus for advancing an instrument into a body comprising:
- a base, wherein the base defines a trajectory;
a first stage moveably coupled to the base, wherein the first stage is moveable along the trajectory;
a second stage moveably coupled to the first stage along a guide rail extending between the first and second stages, wherein the second stage is moveable relative to the first stage on or parallel to the trajectory and operable to move an instrument coupled thereto with respect to the base and the first stage;
a plurality of rollers having corresponding axles positioned at different angles to one another around the guide rail; and
a hydraulic system including;
a hydraulic cylinder coupled to the first stage;
a hydraulic piston coupled to the second stage; and
a hydraulic actuator in fluid communication with the hydraulic cylinder and hydraulic piston, wherein the hydraulic actuator is operable to advance the hydraulic piston with respect to the hydraulic cylinder and move the second stage relative to the first stage.

Abstract
This documents describes among other things a normalizing stage apparatus, tools and methods. One example includes a base that defines a trajectory. A first stage is moveably coupled to the base and the first stage moves along the trajectory. A second stage is moveably coupled to the first stage and moves an instrument coupled thereto with respect to the base and the first stage. Before movement of the instrument, the first and second stages are in first positions desired (e.g. predetermined) distances from a target area in the body. Another example includes the first stage and a guide tube stop coupled with the first stage. A guide tube is coupled with the guide tube stop and extends through a guide tube stop lumen. The guide tubes outer perimeter is dimensioned and configured to snugly couple with the surface defining the guide tube stop lumen.

7. An apparatus for advancing an instrument into a body comprising:
-
a base defining a trajectory; a first stage moveably coupled to the base and along the trajectory; a second stage moveably coupled to the first stage and operable to move an instrument with respect to the base and the first stage; a hydraulic cylinder and a hydraulic piston coupled relative to the first stage and the second stage, the hydraulic piston attached to the second stage and movable relative to the hydraulic cylinder by movement of the second stage; a hydraulic actuator in fluid communication with the hydraulic cylinder and hydraulic piston, wherein the hydraulic actuator is operable to move the second stage relative to the first stage; a tubular structure coupled to the first stage; a spring having first and second ends, the first end attached to the tubular structure and the second end attached to the second stage, the spring extending through the tubular structure and through the first stage, such that the spring moves the second stage and the hydraulic piston toward a fluid-filled end of the cylinder to maintain pressurization in the hydraulic cylinder; and a bearing coupled between the first stage and the second stage. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19)

8. An apparatus for advancing an instrument into a body comprising:
-
a first stage; a second stage moveably coupled to the first stage, wherein the second stage is moveable relative to the first stage on or parallel to a trajectory extending through the first and second stage; a plurality of rollers coupled to a portion of the second stage; a guide rail extending between the first and second stages, the guide rail sized and shaped to contact the plurality of rollers at different angles to limit the motion of the second stage to linear motion around the guide rail and prevent rotation of the second stage around the guide rail, a hydraulic cylinder coupled to the first stage; a hydraulic piston coupled to the second stage; and a hydraulic actuator in fluid communication with the hydraulic cylinder and hydraulic piston, the hydraulic actuator including a master hydraulic cylinder and a master hydraulic piston, wherein the hydraulic actuator is operable to move the second stage relative to the first stage. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15)
