1. A subscriber unit for use in a wireless network, comprising:
- a transmitter configured to transmit, when the subscriber unit is attempting to first access the wireless network, a first set of transmission bits;
a receiver configured to receive a first indication indicating that the first set of transmission bits has been detected;
wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit, in response to the received first indication, a second set of transmission bits;
wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit, in response to not receiving the first indication, a third set of transmission bits wherein the third set of transmission bits is different than the first set of transmission bits;
wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit, subsequent to the transmitting of the second set of transmission bits, a fourth set of transmission bits; and
wherein the subscriber unit is further configured to facilitate closed loop power control with respect to the fourth set of transmission bits.

Abstract
A base station for controlling transmission power during the establishment of a communication channel utilizes the reception of a short code during initial power ramp-up. The short code is a sequence for detection by the base station which has a much shorter period than a conventional access code. The ramp-up starts from a power level that is lower than the required power level for detection by the base station. The power of the short code is quickly increased until the signal is detected by the base station. Once the base station detects the short code, it transmits an indication that the short code has been detected.

5. A wireless subscriber unit comprising:
-
a transmitter configured to send a first transmission derived using a first sequence to access a network and, on a condition that a first indication indicating that the first transmission was detected is not received by the subscriber unit, to transmit a second transmission derived using a second sequence; wherein the transmitter is further configured to send, in response to the subscriber unit receiving the first indication, a third transmission, wherein the first and second transmissions are not closed loop power controlled; and wherein the transmitter is further configured to send, subsequent to sending the third transmission, a fourth transmission that is closed loop power controlled. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8)

-
a transmitter configured to send a first transmission to access a network and, on a condition that a first indication indicating that the first transmission was detected is not received by the subscriber unit, to transmit a second transmission; wherein the transmitter is further configured to send, in response to the subscriber unit receiving the first indication, a third transmission, wherein the first and second transmissions are not closed loop power controlled; and wherein the transmitter is further configured to send, subsequent to sending the third transmission, a fourth transmission that is closed loop power controlled. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12)
