1. A blood glucose monitoring system, comprising:

  • a blood glucose monitoring device for producing digitally encoded health signals representative of a blood glucose level of a user; and

    a programmable microprocessor-based portable unit, separate from said blood glucose monitoring device, comprising;

    a user interface including (i) a display for displaying information, (ii) a plurality of switches operable for interactively controlling said programmable microprocessor-based portable unit and for manipulating said information displayed on said display and (iii) a circuit coupled to said plurality of switches for generating signals in response to operation of said switches; and

    digital data storage media tangibly embodying therein (i) program instructions that are executable for (a) signal processing in response to signals based upon said digitally encoded health signals, (b) signal processing of insulin dosage data received from said user and (c) detecting a need for a change in an insulin dosage of said user and (ii) storage of (a) time and date tagged glucose test results, (b) calibration information and (c) identification data of said user; and

    a signal processor for performing said signal processing by executing said program instructions, wherein said program instructions are customized to said identification data of said user.
