Abstract

An intravenous catheter anchoring assembly is disclosed and includes a patient-contacting membrane, a platform, and a retaining strap for securing a catheter or tubing of an administration set to a patient. The strap is attached to the platform with adjustable pull-tabs that permit a variety of catheter shapes and sizes to be secured. The strap is also elastomeric so that the strap is stretchable and thereby grabs the secured catheter. The strap and platform further define a plurality of passageways that permit the catheter to be secured in a plurality of non-aligned directions.

Claims

1. An intravenous catheter anchoring device for securing a catheter to a patient, wherein the catheter includes a distal section configured to be at least partially inserted into the patient and a proximal section, said device comprising:

a platform configured for removable attachment to the patient and including a plurality of connectors, each connector having a distal end and including an upstanding wall spaced from the distal end, the upstanding wall projecting from said connector; and

a retaining strap cooperating with the plurality of connectors to define a catheter-receiving passageway configured to receive a portion of the catheter with the proximal and distal sections projecting outwardly therefrom,

said retaining strap comprising an elastomeric body and a plurality of lobes, with the body being elastically stretched when the catheter portion is received in the passageway wherein the catheter is gripped and thereby axially retained by the device, each lobe projecting towards the platform and engaging a respective upstanding wall at least when said retaining strap is cooperating with said plurality of connectors,

said elastomeric body having a Shore A Durometer hardness in the range of about 40 to about 70.

2. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1, said hardness being about 50.

3. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1, said elastomeric body being formed of a strap material comprising silicone.

4. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 3, said silicone being a two-part liquid injection molded silicone.

5. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1, said elastomeric body presenting a catheter-gripping surface configured to engage the catheter portion when received in the passageway, said catheter-gripping surface having a surface finish of about 125 microinch or less.

6. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 5, said catheter-gripping surface having a surface finish of about 63 microinch.

7. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1, said elastomeric body having a modulus of elasticity at about zero strain of less than about 1000 psi.

8. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 7, said modulus of elasticity at about zero strain being about 310 psi.

9. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 7, said platform including a platform material having a modulus of elasticity in the range of about 10,000,000 psi to about 40,000,000 psi.

10. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 9, said platform material being selected from the group consisting of ABS, polycarbonate, polypropylene, and combinations thereof.

11. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1, said body being configured so that strain varies along the length thereof when the body is elastically stretched.

12. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 11, said body presenting a stretch portion and a pull-tab, said stretch portion being configured to engage the catheter portion when received in the passageway, said body being configured so that the stretch portion undergoes greater strain than the pull-tab when the body is elastically stretched.

13. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 12, said body being homogeneous, with the pull-tab having a greater thickness than the stretch portion to provide the varying degrees of strain.

14. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 12, said stretch portion being centrally located to partially define the catheter-receiving passageway, said pull-tab being removably attached to the platform.

15. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 14, said stretch portion presenting a thickness of about 0.010 inch to about 0.180 inch.

16. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 14, said platform including a base, said body including spaced apart pull-tabs each being removably attached to a corresponding one of the connectors, said stretch portion being located between the pull tabs.

17. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1, said platform including a base, said body including spaced apart pull-tabs each being removably attached to a corresponding one of the connectors.

18. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 17, each of said pull-tabs including an attachment location, at which the pull-tabs removably and selectively attach to the corresponding one of the connectors.

19. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 18, said body presenting an upper surface and a lower surface, with said lower surface forming a portion of the catheter-receiving passageway, said attachment locations each including a through-hole extending between the surfaces, said attachment locations each including a raised rib on each of the surfaces in a circumscribing relationship to the through-hole, said raised ribs being integral with the pull-tab and thereby operable to resist tearing of the pull-tab adjacent to the through-hole.

The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 19, said raised rib on the upper surface including an upwardly converging deflection surface that circumscribes the connector when the pull-tab is attached to the connector to restrict contact with the connector, said raised rib on the lower surface including a downwardly converging deflection surface that circumscribes the connector when the pull-tab is attached to the connector to restrict contact with the connector.

21. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 19, each of said lobes protruding from the lower surface in a radial relationship to the raised rib, with the lobes of the attachment locations extending generally toward one another.

22. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 17, at least one of said pull-tabs presenting raised ribs for facilitating grasping of the at least one of said tabs.

23. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 17, said plurality of connectors each including a post extending from the base for receiving the pull-tabs.

24. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 23, said plurality of connectors each including a head end spaced from the base, said head end having a larger diameter than at least part of the post, each of said pull-tabs including a through-hole configured to be received on the post of the corresponding one of the connectors, said through-hole having a cross-sectional dimension smaller than the head end of the corresponding one of the connectors, such that the pull-tab must be elastically stretched around the head end thereby releasably retaining the pull-tab on the connector.

25. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 24, said head end being frusto-spherical in shape.

26. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 24, each of said posts presenting a proximal end adjacent the base and opposite the head end, said posts including at least one diverging pair, in which the head ends are spaced apart further than the proximal ends.

27. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 17, said platform presenting an internal platform surface, said base forming at least part of the internal platform surface, said internal platform surface forming a portion of said catheter-receiving passageway.

28. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 27, at least part of said base being substantially rigid.

29. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 27, said internal platform surface being curvilinear.

30. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 27, at least part of the internal platform surface being formed of an elastomeric material so as to grip the catheter.

31. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 30, said elastomeric material including silicone.

32. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1, said platform and said retaining strap cooperatively forming multiple non-aligned catheter-receiving passageways, said passageways cooperatively providing multiple catheter orientations relative to the device, said platform and strap being intercoupled at more than two coupling locations, said platform and strap cooperatively defining a plurality of catheter-receiving openings, each of which is between adjacent ones of the coupling locations, each of said passageways extending between a corresponding pair of catheter-receiving openings.

33. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 32, said retaining strap presenting four spaced apart coupling locations such that the platform and strap cooperatively define four catheter-receiving openings.

34. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1;

and

a flexible and permeable membrane configured for removably attaching the platform to the patient.

35. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 34, said platform and membrane being adhesively interconnected along a connection surface of the platform, said connection surface being grooved.

36. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1, said platform including a base, said body including spaced apart pull-tabs each being removably attached to a corresponding one of the connectors, said retaining strap presenting opposite catheter-retaining strap surfaces that extend between the ends, said retaining strap being shiftably attached to the platform between first and second catheter-retaining positions, a first one of the strap surfaces cooperating with the internal platform surface in the first catheter-retaining position to define the catheter-receiving passageway, said retaining strap operable to be inverted so that a second one of the strap surfaces cooperates with the internal platform surface in the second catheter-retaining position to define the passageway.

37. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 36, said retaining strap including multiple lobes projecting from the first one of the strap surfaces and being spaced between the connectors, said passageway being smaller when the retaining strap is in the first catheter-retaining position than in the second catheter-retaining position, with the strap being thereby configured to retain different catheter sizes.

38. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 37, each of said pull-tabs including an attachment location, at which the pull-tabs removably and selectively attach to the corresponding one of the connectors, said lobes projecting inwardly from a corresponding one of the attachment locations.

39. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 38, said connectors including upstanding walls integrally formed with corresponding posts and projecting inwardly therefrom, with the walls being operable to restrict catheter movement within the passageway.

40. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 38, each of the lobes presenting a grooved recess receiving the corresponding one of the upright walls when the retaining strap is in the first catheter-retaining position.

41. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 1, said retaining strap being less rigid than the platform, so that the platform substantially retains its shape when the body is elastically stretched to receive the catheter in the passageway, said hardness being about 50, said elastomeric body presenting a catheter-gripping surface configured to engage the catheter portion when received in the passageway, said catheter-gripping surface having a surface finish of about 125 microinch or less, said body presenting a stretch portion and a pull-tab, said stretch portion being configured to engage the catheter portion when received in the passageway, said body being configured so that the stretch portion undergoes greater strain than the pull-tab when the body is elastically stretched, said stretch portion presenting a thickness of about 0.010 inch to about 0.180 inch.

42. An intravenous catheter anchoring device for securing a catheter to a patient, wherein the catheter includes a distal section configured to be at least partially inserted into the patient, a proximal section, and a suture hub intermediate of the proximal and distal sections, with the suture hub including a hub body and oppositely extending suture wings projecting from the hub body, said device comprising:

a platform configured for removable attachment to the patient and including a plurality of connectors, each connector having a distal end and including an upstanding wall spaced from the distal end, the upstanding wall projecting from said connector; and

a retaining strap presenting a lower surface that cooperates with the plurality of connectors to define a catheter-receiving passageway configured to receive the suture hub with the proximal and distal catheter sections projecting outwardly therefrom,

said retaining strap comprising an elastomeric body coupled to the platform at a coupling location and removably attached to the platform at a pair of spaced apart discrete attachment locations, with the body being elastically stretched when the suture hub is received in the passageway,

said retaining strap and platform cooperatively defining a wing-receiving section of the catheter-receiving passageway between the attachment locations, with the wing-receiving section configured to receive one of the wings of the suture hub therein,

said body presenting a stretch portion between the coupling location and the attachment locations, said stretch portion being configured to engage the suture hub when received in the passageway,

said body being configured so that the stretch portion undergoes greater strain than the coupling and attachment locations when the body is elastically stretched,

said attachment locations each including a lobe protruding from the lower surface, with the lobes of the attachment locations extending generally toward one another to cooperatively position the one wing therebetween, each lobe engaging a respective upstanding wall at least when said retaining strap is cooperating with said plurality of connectors.

43. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42, said elastomeric body presenting spaced apart opposite ends, said retaining strap presenting an upper surface opposite the lower surface, with the strap surfaces extending between the ends, said retaining strap being shiftably attached to the platform between first and second catheter-retaining positions, a first one of the strap surfaces cooperating with the internal platform surface in the first catheter-retaining position to define the catheter-receiving passageway, said retaining strap operable to be inverted so that a second one of the strap surfaces cooperates with the internal platform surface in the second catheter-retaining position to define the passageway.

44. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42, said first one of the strap surfaces presenting multiple lobes spaced between the attachment locations.

45. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 44, said lobes projecting inwardly from the corresponding one of the attachment locations.

46. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 45, each of the lobes presenting a grooved recess that receives a corresponding portion of the platform.

47. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42, said retaining strap being less rigid than the platform, so that the platform substantially retains its shape when the body is elastically stretched to receive the catheter in the passageway.

48. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 47, said retaining strap being formed of a first material and said platform being formed of a second material, said first material having greater elasticity than the second material.

49. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 47, said body being configured so that strain varies along the length thereof when the body is elastically stretched.

50. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42, said body being homogeneous, with the coupling and attachment locations having a greater thickness than the stretch portion to provide the varying degrees of strain.

51. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42, said elastomeric body being formed of a material including silicone.

52. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42, said stretch portion presenting a thickness of about 0.010 inch to about 0.180 inch.

53. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42, said platform including a base, said body including spaced apart pull-tabs each being removably attached to a corresponding one of the connectors to define a respective one of the coupling or attachment locations, said stretch portion being located between the pull tabs.

54. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 53, said body presenting an upper surface, said attachment locations each including a through-hole extending between the surfaces, said attachment locations each including a raised rib on each of the surfaces in a circumscribing relationship to the through-hole, said raised ribs being integral with the pull-tab and thereby operable to resist tearing of the pull-tab adjacent to the through-hole.

55. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 54, said raised rib on the upper surface including an upwardly converging deflection surface that circumscribes the connector when the pull-tab is attached to the connector to restrict contact with the connector, said raised rib on the lower surface including a downwardly converging deflection surface that circumscribes the connector when the pull-tab is attached to the connector to restrict contact with the connector.

56. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 54, said lobes each extending in a radial relationship to the raised rib.

57. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 53, at least one of said pull-tabs presenting raised ribs for facilitating grasping of the at least one of said tabs.

58. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 53, said plurality of connectors each including a post extending from the base for receiving the pull-tabs.

59. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 58, said plurality of connectors each including a head end spaced from the base, said head end having a larger diameter than at least part of the post, each of said pull-tabs including a through-hole configured to be received on the post of the corresponding one of the connectors, said through-hole having a cross-sectional dimension smaller than the head end of the corresponding one of the connectors, such that the pull-tab must be elastically stretched around the head end thereby releasably retaining the pull-tab on the connector.

60. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 59, said head end being frusto-spherical in shape.

61. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 59, each of said posts presenting a proximal end adjacent the base and opposite the head end, said posts including at least one diverging pair, in which the head ends are spaced apart further than the proximal ends.

62. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 53, said platform presenting an internal platform surface, said base forming at least part of the internal platform surface, said internal platform surface forming a portion of said catheter-receiving passageway.

63. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 62, at least part of said base being substantially rigid.

64. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 62, at least part of the internal surface being formed of an elastomeric material so as to grip the catheter.

65. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 64, said elastomeric material including silicone.

66. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42, said platform and said retaining strap cooperatively forming multiple non-aligned catheter-receiving passageways, said passageways cooperatively providing multiple catheter orientations relative to the device, said platform and strap cooperatively defining a plurality of catheter-receiving openings, each of which is between adjacent ones of the coupling and attachment locations, each of said passageways extending between a corresponding pair of catheter-receiving openings.

67. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 66, said retaining strap presenting four spaced apart coupling and attachment locations such that the platform and strap cooperatively define four catheter-receiving openings.

68. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42;

and

a flexible and permeable membrane configured for removably attaching the platform to the patient.

69. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 68, said platform and membrane being adhesively interconnected along a connection surface of the platform, said connection surface being grooved.

70. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 42, said elastomeric body having a Shore A Durometer hardness in the range of about 40 to about 70.

71. An intravenous catheter anchoring device for securing a catheter to a patient, wherein the catheter includes a distal section configured to be at least partially inserted into the patient, a proximal section, and a suture hub intermediate of the proximal and distal sections, with the suture hub including a hub body and oppositely extending suture wings projecting from the hub body, said device comprising:

a platform configured for removable attachment to the patient, said platform presenting a catheter-receiving internal platform surface, an outer perimeter, and at least two pairs of connectors spaced along the perimeter; and

a retaining strap cooperating with the platform to define a catheter-receiving passageway configured to receive the suture hub with the proximal and distal sections projecting outwardly therefrom,

said retaining strap comprising an elongated flexible body presenting at least two pairs of spaced apart discrete attachment locations, with each of the attachment locations being releasably connectable to a respective one of the connectors,

each of said connectors including an upright post that projects upwardly from the platform surface for receiving the strap at the corresponding attachment location,

said retaining strap and platform cooperatively defining a wing-receiving section of the catheter-receiving passageway between adjacent ones of the connectors, with each wing-receiving section configured to receive one of the wings of the suture hub therein,

each of said connectors further including an upstanding wing-engaging member that is integrally formed with the post and projects therefrom to cooperatively define the respective wing-receiving section,

said retaining strap further including a plurality of lobes, each lobe projecting towards the platform and engaging a respective one of the upstanding wing-engaging members at least when said post is received by the corresponding attachment location of said retaining strap.

72. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 71, said elastomeric body presenting spaced apart opposite ends, said retaining strap presenting opposite catheter-retaining strap surfaces that extend between the ends, said retaining strap being shiftably attached to the platform between first and second catheter-retaining positions, a first one of the strap surfaces cooperating with the internal platform surface in the first catheter-retaining position to define the catheter-receiving passageway, said retaining strap operable to be inverted so that a second one of the strap surfaces cooperates with the internal platform surface in the second catheter-retaining position to define the passageway.

73. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 71, said lobes being spaced between the attachment locations, with each lobe engaging a respective one of the upstanding wing-engaging members.

74. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 73, said lobes projecting inwardly from the corresponding one of the attachment locations.

75. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 74, each of the lobes presenting a grooved recess that receives the respective one of the upstanding wing-engaging members.

76. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 71, said retaining strap being less rigid than the platform, so that the platform substantially retains its shape when the body is elastically stretched to receive the catheter in the passageway.

77. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 76, said retaining strap being formed of a first material and said platform being formed of a second material, said first material having greater elasticity than the second material.

78. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 76, said body being configured so that strain varies along the length thereof when the body is elastically stretched.

79. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 78, said body presenting a stretch portion and a pull-tab,

said stretch portion being configured to engage the suture hub when received in the passageway, said body being configured so that the stretch portion undergoes greater strain than the pull-tab when the body is elastically stretched.

80. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 79, said body being homogeneous, with the pull-tab having a greater thickness than the stretch portion to provide the varying degrees of strain.

81. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 79, said stretch portion being centrally located to partially define the catheter-receiving passageway, said pull-tab being removably attached to the platform.

82. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 79, said stretch portion presenting a thickness of about 0.010 inch to about 0.180 inch.

83. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 79, said platform including a base, said body including spaced apart pull-tabs each being removably attached to a corresponding one of the connectors at the attachment locations, said stretch portion being located between the pull tabs.

84. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 83, said body presenting an upper surface and a lower surface, with said lower surface forming a portion of the catheter-receiving passageway, said attachment locations each including a through-hole extending between the surfaces, said attachment locations each including a raised rib on each of the surfaces in a circumscribing relationship to the through-hole, said raised ribs being integral with the pull-tab and thereby operable to resist tearing of the pull-tab adjacent to the through-hole.

85. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 84, said raised rib on the upper surface including an upwardly converging deflection surface that circumscribes the connector when the pull-tab is attached to the connector to restrict contact with the connector, said raised rib on the lower surface including a downwardly converging deflection surface that circumscribes the connector when the pull-tab is attached to the connector to restrict contact with the connector.

86. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 84, each lobe protruding from the lower surface in a radial relationship to the raised rib, with the lobes of the attachment locations extending generally toward one another.

87. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 83, at least one of said pull-tabs presenting raised ribs for facilitating grasping of the at least one of said tabs.

88. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 83, said posts extending from the base for receiving the pull-tabs.

89. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 88, said plurality of connectors each including a head end spaced from the base, said head end having a larger diameter than at least part of the post, each of said pull-tabs including a through-hole configured to be received on the post of the corresponding one of the connectors, said through-hole having a cross-sectional dimension smaller than the head end of the corresponding one of the connectors, such that the pull-tab must be elastically stretched around the head end thereby releasably retaining the pull-tab on the connector.

90. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 89, said head end being frusto-spherical in shape.

91. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 89, each of said posts presenting a proximal end adjacent the base and opposite the head end, said posts including at least one diverging pair, in which the head ends are spaced apart further than the proximal ends.

92. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 83, said base forming at least part of the internal platform surface, said internal platform surface forming a portion of said catheter-receiving passageway.

93. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 92, at least part of said base being substantially rigid.

94. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 92, at least part of the internal surface being formed of an elastomeric material so as to grip the catheter.

95. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 94, said elastomeric material including silicone.

96. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 71, said platform and said retaining strap cooperatively forming multiple non-aligned catheter-receiving passageways, said passageways cooperatively providing multiple catheter orientations relative to the device, said platform and strap being intercoupled at more than two attachment locations, said platform and strap cooperatively defining a plurality of catheter-receiving openings, each of which is between adjacent ones of the attachment locations, each of said passageways extending between a corresponding pair of catheter-receiving openings.

97. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 96, said retaining strap presenting four spaced apart attachment locations such that the platform and strap cooperatively define four catheter-receiving openings.

98. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 71;

and

a flexible and permeable membrane configured for removably attaching the platform to the patient.

99. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 98, said platform and membrane being adhesively interconnected along a connection surface of the platform, said connection surface being grooved.

100. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 71, said flexible body comprising an elastomeric body, said elastomeric body being formed of a material including silicone.

101. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 71, said flexible body comprising an elastomeric body, said elastomeric body having a Shore A Durometer hardness in the range of about 40 to about 70.

102. An intravenous catheter anchoring device for securing a catheter to a patient, wherein the catheter includes a distal section configured to be at least partially inserted into the patient and a proximal section, said device comprising:

a platform configured for removable attachment to the patient,

said platform presenting a connector; and

a retaining strap cooperating with the platform to define a catheter-receiving passageway configured to receive a portion of the catheter with the proximal and distal sections projecting outwardly therefrom,

said retaining strap comprising an elastomeric body presenting spaced apart opposite ends, one of which is coupled to the platform at a coupling location and the other of which is removably attached to the connector,

said body including a pull-tab and a plurality of lobes, the pull-tab being removably attached to the connector at an attachment location, each lobe projecting towards the platform at least when said retaining strap is cooperating with said platform,

said connector including a post removably receiving the pull-tab and extending from the attachment location in a direction away from the coupling location,

said elastomeric body being elastically stretched when the catheter portion is received in the passageway, with the pull-tab tending to remain on the post when the body is stretched,

said connector including a planar section that extends radially from the post toward the coupling location and is configured to space the catheter apart from at least a portion of the post and to engage a respective lobe at least when said post is received by said retaining strap.

103. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 102, said planar section presenting an innermost edge of the connector that is spaced apart from the post.

104. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 103, said platform presenting a base, said post presenting opposite proximal and distal ends, with the post being attached to the base at the proximal end, said planar section extending substantially from the proximal end to the pull-tab.

105. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 102, said retaining strap being less rigid than the platform, so that the platform substantially retains its shape when the body is elastically stretched to receive the catheter in the passageway.

106. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 105, said retaining strap being formed of a first material and said platform being formed of a second material, said first material having greater elasticity than the second material.

107. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 105, said body being configured so that strain varies along the length thereof when the body is elastically stretched.

108. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 107, said body presenting a stretch portion, said stretch portion being configured to engage the catheter portion when received in the passageway, said body being configured so that the stretch portion undergoes greater strain than the pull-tab when the body is elastically stretched.

109. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 108, said body being homogeneous, with the pull-tab having a greater thickness than the stretch portion to provide the varying degrees of strain.

110. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 108, said stretch portion being centrally located to partially define the catheter-receiving passageway.

111. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 110, said stretch portion presenting a thickness of about 0.010 inch to about 0.180 inch.

112. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 111, said platform including a base and a plurality of posts projecting therefrom, said body including multiple spaced apart pull-tabs each being removably attached to a corresponding one of the posts, said stretch portion being located between the pull tabs.

113. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 112, each of said pull-tabs including an attachment location, at which the pull-tabs removably and selectively attach to the corresponding one of the posts.

114. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 113, said body presenting an upper surface and a lower surface, with said lower surface forming a portion of the catheter-receiving passageway, said attachment locations each including a through-hole extending between the surfaces, said attachment locations each including a raised rib on each of the surfaces in a circumscribing relationship to the through-hole, said raised ribs being integral with the pull-tab and thereby operable to resist tearing of the pull-tab adjacent to the through-hole.

115. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 114, said raised rib on the upper surface including an upwardly converging deflection surface that circumscribes the connector when the pull-tab is attached to the connector to restrict contact with the connector, said raised rib on the lower surface including a downwardly converging deflection surface that circumscribes the connector when the pull-tab is attached to the connector to restrict contact with the connector.

116. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 114, each of said lobes protruding from the lower surface in a radial relationship to the raised rib, with the lobes of the attachment locations extending generally toward one another, said lobes each presenting a slot therein, with each of said slots receiving corresponding ones of the planar sections therein.

117. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 112, at least one of said pull-tabs presenting raised ribs for facilitating grasping of the at least one of said tabs.

118. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 112, said plurality of connectors each including a head end spaced from the base, said head end having a larger diameter than at least part of the post, each of said pull-tabs including a through-hole configured to be received on the post of the corresponding one of the connectors, said through-hole having a cross-sectional dimension smaller than the head end of the corresponding one of the connectors, such that the pull-tab must be elastically stretched around the head end thereby releasably retaining the pull-tab on the connector.

119. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 118, said head end being frusto-spherical in shape.

120. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 118, each of said posts presenting a proximal end adjacent the base and opposite the head end, said posts including at least one diverging pair, in which the head ends are spaced apart further than the proximal ends.

121. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 112, said platform presenting an internal platform surface, said base forming at least part of the internal platform surface, said internal platform surface forming a portion of said catheter-receiving passageway.

122. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 121, at least part of said base being substantially rigid.

123. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 121, at least part of the internal surface being formed of an elastomeric material so as to grip the catheter.

124. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 123, said elastomeric material including silicone.

125. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 102, said platform and said retaining strap cooperatively forming multiple non-aligned catheter-receiving passageways, said passageways cooperatively providing multiple catheter orientations relative to the device, said platform and strap being intercoupled at more than two attachment locations, said platform and strap cooperatively defining a plurality of catheter-receiving openings, each of which is between adjacent ones of the attachment locations, each of said passageways extending between a corresponding pair of catheter-receiving openings.

126. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 125, said retaining strap presenting four spaced apart attachment locations such that the platform and strap cooperatively define four catheter-receiving openings.

127. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 102;

and

a flexible and permeable membrane configured for removably attaching the platform to the patient.

128. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 127, said platform and membrane being adhesively interconnected along a connection surface of the platform, said connection surface being grooved.

129. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 102, said elastomeric body being formed of a material including silicone.

130. The intravenous catheter anchoring device as claimed in claim 102, said elastomeric body having a Shore A Durometer hardness in the range of about 40 to about 70.
