Abstract

A tube port includes a tubular first stem having an interior surface and an exterior surface extending between a first end and a longitudinally spaced apart second end. The interior surface bounds a passage that longitudinally extends through the first stem. The tube port also includes a flange encircling and radially outwardly projecting from the first end of the first stem. The flange and the first stem are integrally formed as a unitary member comprised of a flexible elastomeric material having a durometer on a Shore A scale with a value of less than 90.

Claims

1. A tube port comprising:

a tubular first stem having an interior surface and an exterior surface extending between a first end and a longitudinally spaced apart second end, the interior surface bounding a passage that longitudinally extends through the first stem, the first end of the first stem terminating at a first end face that encircles an opening of the passage;

an annular lip seal radially inwardly projecting from the interior surface of the first stem at the first end thereof; and

a flange encircling and radially outwardly projecting from the first end of the first stem, the flange having a first side and an opposing second side, the first side of the flange and the first end face of the first stem combining to form a terminal end face; and

an annular channel recessed on the terminal end face so as to encircle the opening of the passage.

2. The tube port as recited in claim 1, wherein the lip seal is disposed at the first end of the first stem so that the flange and the lip seal are disposed in substantially the same plane.

3. The tube port as recited in claim 1, wherein a first side of the flange and a first side of the lip seal are disposed in substantially the same plane.

4. The tube port as recited in claim 1, wherein the flange, the first stem, and the lip seal are integrally formed as a unitary member comprised of a flexible elastomeric material.

5. The tube port as recited in claim 4, wherein the elastomeric material has a durometer on a Shore A scale with a value of less than 90.

6. The tube port as recited in claim 4, wherein the elastomeric material is comprised of polyethylene.

7. The tube port as recited in claim 4, wherein the elastomeric material is sufficiently flexible to enable the first stem to be selectively clamped closed at a location along the length thereof with substantially no permanent deformation to the first stem.

8. The tube port as recited in claim 1, wherein the first stem has a maximum length in a range between about 5 cm to about 15 cm.

9. The tube port as recited in claim 1, wherein at least one of the exterior surface or the interior surface of the first stem has a constricting taper extending along the entire length thereof.

10. The tube port as recited in claim 1, wherein the exterior surface of the first stem at the second end thereof has a substantially smooth cylindrical configuration that is free of any radially outwardly projecting member.

11. The tube port as recited in claim 1, further comprising a tubular second stem projecting from the flange from a same side of the flange as the first stem.

12. A container system comprising:

a container having an interior surface bounding a chamber, the chamber being adapted to hold a fluid;

the tube port as recited in claim 1 coupled with the container so that the passage extending through the first stem communicates with the chamber of the container; and

a probe slidably disposed within the passage of the tube port so that a substantially liquid tight seal is formed between an exterior surface of the probe and the lip seal.

13. The container system as recited in claim 12, wherein the probe comprises one of a temperature probe, a dissolved oxygen probe, or a pH probe.

14. The container system as recited in claim 12, wherein the container comprises a bag that is comprised of one or more sheets of flexible polymeric material.

15. The tube port as recited in claim 1, wherein the annular lip seal has an inside edge that bounds an openly exposed opening extending through the lip seal.

16. The tube port as recited in claim 1, wherein the annular channel is recessed on the first end face of the first stem.

17. The tube port as recited in claim 4, wherein the elastomeric material has a durometer on a Shore A scale with a value of less than 70.

18. The tube port as recited in claim 1, wherein the interior surface of the first stem at the second end thereof has a smooth substantially cylindrical configuration that is free of any radially inwardly projecting member.

19. The tube port as recited in claim 11, wherein the second stem has a different configuration than the first stem.

20. The tube port as recited in claim 1, further comprising a probe disposed within the passage of the first stem, the annular lip seal resiliently biasing against the probe so as to form a liquid tight seal therebetween.

21. The tube port as recited in claim 1, further comprising a clamp mounted on the first stem so as to selectively crimp the passage of the first stem closed.

22. A container system comprising:

a container having an interior surface bounding a chamber, the chamber being adapted to hold a fluid;

the tube port as recited in claim 1 coupled with the container so that the passage extending through the first stem communicates with the chamber of the container; and

a tubular connector having an interior surface and an exterior surface extending between a first end and a longitudinally spaced apart second end, the interior surface of the tubular connector bounding an opening extending through the tubular connector, the first end of the tubular connector being received within the second end of the first stem of the tube port such that the first stem resiliently biases against the exterior surface of the tubular connector.

23. The container system as recited in claim 22, further comprising an elongated tube coupled with the second end of the tubular connector.

24. The container system as recited in claim 22, wherein the container comprises a bag that is comprised of one or more sheets of flexible polymeric material, the flange of the tube port being coupled with the bag.

25. A container system comprising:

a container having an interior surface bounding a chamber that is adapted to hold a fluid and having an opposing exterior surface, an opening being formed through the container from the interior surface to the exterior surface;

a tube port comprising;

a tubular stem having an interior surface and an exterior surface extending between a first end and a longitudinally spaced apart second end, the interior surface bounding a passage that longitudinally extends through the stem;

an annular lip seal radially inwardly projecting from the interior surface of the stem; and

a flange encircling and radially outwardly projecting from the first end of the stem, the flange being secured to the interior surface of the container so that the stem projects out of the container through the opening.

26. The container system as recited in claim 25, wherein the container comprises a bag that is comprised of one or more sheets of flexible polymeric material.

27. The container system as recited in claim 25, wherein the tube port is comprised of an elastomeric material has a durometer on a Shore A scale with a value of less than 70.

28. The container system as recited in claim 25, further comprising a tubular connector having an interior surface and an exterior surface extending between a first end and a longitudinally spaced apart second end, the interior surface of the tubular connector bounding an opening extending through the tubular connector, the first end of the tubular connector being received within the second end of the stem of the tube port such that the stem resiliently biases against the exterior surface of the tubular connector.

29. The container system as recited in claim 25, wherein the tube port is integrally formed as a single unitary member.

30. A container system comprising:

a container having an interior surface bounding a chamber, the chamber being adapted to hold a fluid;

a tube port comprising;

a tubular stem having an interior surface and an exterior surface extending between a first end and a longitudinally spaced apart second end, the interior surface bounding a passage that longitudinally extends through the stem;

an annular lip seal radially inwardly projecting from the interior surface of the stem; and

a flange encircling and radially outwardly projecting from the first end of the stem, the tube port being coupled with the container so that the passage extending through the stem communicates with the chamber of the container; and

a probe slidably disposed within the passage of the tube port so that a substantially liquid tight seal is formed between an exterior surface of the probe and the lip seal, the probe comprising one of a temperature probe, a dissolved oxygen probe, or a pH probe.

31. The container system as recited in claim 30, wherein the container comprises a bag that is comprised of one or more sheets of flexible polymeric material.

32. The container system as recited in claim 30, wherein the tube port is comprised of an elastomeric material having a durometer on a Shore A scale with a value of less than 90.

33. The container system as recited in claim 30, wherein the tube port is integrally formed as a single unitary member.
