Abstract

An apparatus for cleansing wounds in which irrigant fluid from a reservoir connected to a conformable wound dressing and wound exudate from the dressing are moved by a device (which may be a single pump or two pumps) for moving fluid through a flow path which passes through the dressing and over a biodegradable scaffold in contact with the wound bed (which encourages healing tissue growth from the wound bed). The apparatus has means (which includes the device(s)) for providing simultaneous aspiration and irrigation of the wound. A dressing assembly including the dressing and the scaffold, and the dressing and a method of treatment using the apparatus.

Claims

1. An apparatus for aspirating, irrigating and/or cleansing wounds, the apparatus comprising:

a fluid flow path a comprising a conformable wound dressing having a backing layer capable of forming a relatively fluid-tight seal over a wound, the backing layer comprising a wound-facing face, a fluid supply tube and a fluid offtake tube;

a biodegradable scaffold positionable under the backing layer and configured to be placed in contact with a wound bed in use;

a fluid reservoir in communication with the fluid supply tube;

means for providing simultaneous aspiration and irrigation comprising at least one device for moving fluid through the fluid flow path, the apparatus being configured such that fluid may be supplied to fill the fluid flow path from the fluid reservoir via the fluid supply tube while fluid is aspirated through the fluid offtake tube; and

means for flow regulation in communication with either the fluid supply tube or the fluid offtake tube configured to vary the flow rate of a fluid through either the fluid supply tube or the fluid offtake tube at least between two non-zero flow rate values.

2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the biodegradable scaffold is selected from the group consisting of a three dimensional mesh, sponge and felt.

3. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the biodegradable scaffold comprises a poly(hydroxyl acid) or ester thereof selected from the group consisting of poly(glycolic acid), poly(l-lactic acid), poly (D-lactic acid) and esters thereof, and copolymers or blends thereof.

An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the biodegradable scaffold comprises a biologically sourced biodegradable substantially protein based polymer selected from the group consisting of collagens, fibronectins, and fibrins, as whole molecules or derivatives thereof from proteolytic or chemical treatments, or blends thereof.

5. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the at least one device for moving fluid through the fluid flow path is a first device for moving fluid downstream of and away from the wound dressing, and the apparatus comprises at least one of:

a second device for moving fluid through the wound applied to irrigant in the fluid supply tube upstream of and towards the wound dressing;

means for aspirate flow regulation connected to the fluid offtake tube; and

means for supply flow regulation connected to the fluid supply tube.

6. An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the apparatus is configured to direct fluid in the fluid offtake tube downstream of the wound dressing to a collection vessel, and the first device is in communication with the collection vessel.

7. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the at least one device for moving fluid through the fluid flow path is a fixed throughput device, and the means for flow regulation comprises at least one of:

means for supply flow regulation connected to the fluid supply tube; and

means for aspirate flow regulation connected to the fluid offtake tube.

8. An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one device for moving fluid through the fluid flow path comprises a variable-throughput device.

An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the at least one device for moving fluid through the fluid flow path is a first device for moving fluid downstream of and away from the wound dressing, and the means for providing simultaneous aspiration and irrigation of the wound further comprises a second device for moving fluid applied to irrigant in the fluid supply tube upstream of and towards the wound dressing.

10. An apparatus according to claim 8, further comprising at least one fixed throughput device.

11. An apparatus according to claim 8, further comprising at least one variable-throughput device.

13. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the biodegradable scaffold comprises a biodegradable substantially protein based polymer selected from the group consisting of collagens, fibronectins, and fibrins, or fragments thereof, produced through recombinant DNA techniques, or blends thereof.

14. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the at least one device for moving fluid through the fluid flow path comprises a device in communication with the fluid offtake tube and configured to move fluid downstream of and away from the wound dressing.

15. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the means for flow regulation is a flow regulator in communication with the fluid supply tube.

16. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the means for flow regulation is a flow regulator in communication with the fluid offtake tube.

17. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the biodegradable scaffold is in the form of an indented circular disc.

18. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein portions of the biodegradable scaffold can be folded over to adjust the size of the biodegradable scaffold to conform to the size of the wound bed.

12. A method of treating a wound to promote wound healing, the method comprising:

providing a fluid flow path, the fluid flow path comprising a conformable wound dressing, having a backing layer forming a relatively fluid-tight seal over a wound, the backing layer comprising a wound-facing face, a fluid supply tube, a fluid offtake tube, and a biodegradable scaffold located under the backing layer in contact with a wound bed;

moving fluid from a fluid reservoir through the fluid flow path;

regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid supply tube at least between two non-zero flow rate values; and

regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid offtake tube at least between two non-zero flow rate values;

wherein regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid supply tube is independent of regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid offtake tube.

19. The method of claim 12, wherein both regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid supply tube and regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid offtake tube comprise regulating the amount of fluid with a pump.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein at least one of regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid supply tube and regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid offtake tube comprises regulating the amount of fluid with a variable speed pump.

21. The method of claim 12, wherein at least one of regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid supply tube and regulating the amount of fluid that flows through the fluid offtake tube comprises regulating the amount of fluid with a regulator.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the regulator is a valve.

23. An apparatus for aspirating, irrigating and/or cleansing wounds, comprising:

a backing layer capable of forming a relatively fluid-tight seal over a wound;

a fluid supply tube arranged to provide fluid from a fluid reservoir to the wound;

a fluid offtake tube arranged to withdraw fluid from the wound;

a biodegradable scaffold positionable under the backing layer and configured to be placed in contact with the wound in use;

a pump in communication with either the fluid supply tube or the fluid offtake tube and configured to move fluid through at least such tube; and

a regulator in communication with the other of the fluid supply tube or the fluid offtake tube and configured to at least regulate the rate of fluid flowing through such tube at least between two non-zero flow rate values;

wherein the apparatus is configured to provide simultaneous aspiration and irrigation to the wound such that fluid may be supplied to fill the fluid flow path from the fluid reservoir via the fluid supply tube while fluid is aspirated through the fluid offtake tube.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the regulator is a valve.

25. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the pump is in communication with the fluid supply tube and is configured to move fluid through the fluid supply tube, and the regulator is in communication with the fluid offtake tube and is configured to regulate the rate of fluid flowing through the fluid offtake tube.

26. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the pump is in communication with the fluid supply tube and is configured to move fluid through the fluid supply tube, and the regulator is a second pump in communication with the fluid offtake tube and is configured to regulate the rate of fluid flowing through the fluid offtake tube and to move fluid through the fluid offtake tube.

27. The apparatus of claim 23, wherein the regulator is a pump.
