1. An analyte measuring system, the system comprising:
- a mounting unit adapted for mounting on a skin of a host;
an electronics unit detachably connectable to the mounting unit;
a sensor for measuring a level of the analyte, the sensor comprising an in vivo portion for insertion through the skin at an exit site of the host and an ex vivo portion connected to the mounting unit, wherein the sensor is operably connected to the electronics unit when the electronics unit is detachably connected to the mounting unit; and
a communication station for receiving and processing analyte measurements received from the electronics unit, wherein the mounting unit comprises an opening configured to releasably receive the electronics unit therein, and wherein the electronics unit and the mounting unit each comprise at least one electrical contact, wherein each of the at least one electrical contacts is protected from moisture by an elastomeric sealing member that fits within the mounting unit, wherein the elastomeric sealing member forms an interference fit with the electronics unit.

4. A transcutaneous analyte sensor system comprising:

an electrode configured to measure a level of glucose in a host; a membrane disposed over the electrode and configured to limit a transport of glucose to the electrode; and sensor electronics operably connected to the electrode and configured to measure a current flow produced by the electrode, wherein the sensor electronics are configured to measure the current flow in at least a picoAmp range, and wherein the system is configured to have a glucose sensitivity of from about 1 pA/mg/dL to about 9 pA/mg/dL, and wherein the electrode comprises an exposed electroactive working electrode with a surface area between about 0.000084 cm2 and about 0.016 cm2. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6, 7, 8, 9)

10. A sensor system for measuring an analyte concentration in a host, the sensor system comprising:

a sensor comprising at least one electrode; sensor electronics configured to measure the analyte concentration in the host when the sensor is implanted therein, wherein the sensor electronics comprise a data sampling portion in data communication with the at least one electrode, wherein the data sampling portion comprises an analog portion configured to measure the current flowing at the at least one electrode and to convert the current measurement to digital values representative of the current, wherein the sensor electronics comprise an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) that is programmed to request a digital value from the data sampling portion at a predetermined time interval, and wherein the predetermined time interval for requesting the digital value from the data sampling portion is configured to be programmed by a user within the ASIC; and a digital filter configured to smooth a data stream from the data sampling portion. - View Dependent Claims (14, 20, 24, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54)

a mounting unit adapted for mounting on a skin of a host; an electronics unit body detachably connectable to the mounting unit; a sensor for measuring a level of the analyte, the sensor comprising an in vivo portion for insertion through the skin at an exit site of the host and an ex vivo portion connected to the mounting unit, wherein the sensor is operably connected to the electronics unit body when the electronics unit body is detachably connected to the mounting unit, wherein the ex vivo portion is configured and arranged with a greater stiffness than the in vivo portion; and a communication station for receiving and processing analyte measurements received from the electronics unit body, wherein the mounting unit comprises an opening configured to releasably receive the electronics unit body therein, and wherein the mounting unit is configured such that at least a portion of the electronics unit body is located over the exit site of the host when the electronics unit body is detachably connected to the mounting unit, and wherein the sensor is bent after insertion, wherein the system is configured and arranged with a flexibility or articulation such that movement of the mounting unit does not directly translate to movement of the sensor in the host. - View Dependent Claims (36, 37, 38)
