1. A coin processing system, comprising:
- a coin input area configured to receive coins from a user;
a coin processing module configured to count the received coins; and
a foreign object detection system comprising a microphone adapted to generate a sound level signal indicative of the amount of sound in the coin processing module, a memory storing master ambient sound level data for the coin processing module, and a controller electronically coupled to the microphone and the memory, the controller comparing the sound level signal generated by the microphone to the stored master ambient sound level data, the foreign object detection system being configured to detect, based on the comparison, a foreign object within the coin processing module subsequent to counting of all of the received coins.

According to one embodiment of the present invention, a coin processing system includes a coin input area that receives coins from a user, a coin processing module that counts the received coins, and a foreign object detection system that detects a foreign object within the coin processing module subsequent to counting substantially all the received coins.

a coin input area configured to receive a batch of coins from a user; a rotatable disk including a resilient pad configured to impart motion to the received coins; a sorting head having a lower surface generally parallel to and spaced slightly from said resilient pad of said disk, said lower surface of said sorting head forming a plurality of coin exit channels configured to sort and discharge coins of different denominations; at least one microphone disposed proximate the rotatable disk, the at least one microphone being configured to detect sound around the rotatable disk subsequent to processing of said batch of coins and to generate a sound level signal indicative of said detected sound; a memory storing master ambient sound level data for the coin processing module; and a controller operatively coupled to the microphone and the memory, the controller being configured to compare the sound level signal generated by the microphone to the stored master ambient sound level data to detect a presence of a foreign object proximate said rotatable disk, the controller being further configured to output a signal relating to the comparison when the sound level signal does not compare to the stored master ambient sound level data. - View Dependent Claims (12, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21, 22)

13. A coin processing system comprising:

a coin input area configured to receive a plurality of coins from a user; a rotatable disk including a resilient pad configured to impart motion to the received plurality of coins; a sorting head having a lower surface generally parallel to and spaced slightly from said resilient pad of said disk, said lower surface of said sorting head forming a plurality of coin exit channels configured to sort and discharge coins of different denominations; at least one microphone disposed proximate the rotatable disk, the at least one microphone being configured to detect sound around the rotatable disk and to generate a sound level signal indicative of said detected sound; a memory storing master ambient sound level data; a controller operatively coupled to the microphone and the memory, the controller being configured to compare the sound level signal generated by the microphone to the stored master ambient sound level data to detect a presence of a foreign object proximate said rotatable disk, the controller being further configured to output a signal indicating the presence of a foreign object when the sound level signal does not compare to the stored master ambient sound level data; and a diverting structure coupled to the sorting head, the diverting structure being movable between a first position, wherein the diverting structure is substantially flush with a lower surface of the sorting head, and a second position, wherein the diverting structures extends downward from the lower surface of the sorting head, impacting coins and non-coin objects, and directing the coins and non-coin objects towards a center of the pad.

16. A coin processing system comprising:

a coin input area configured to receive a plurality of coins from a user; a rotatable disk including a resilient pad configured to impart motion to the received plurality of coins; a sorting head having a lower surface generally parallel to and spaced slightly from said resilient pad of said disk, said lower surface of said sorting head forming a plurality of coin exit channels configured to sort and discharge coins of different denominations; at least one microphone disposed proximate the rotatable disk, the at least one microphone being configured to detect sound around the rotatable disk and to generate a sound level signal indicative of said detected sound; a memory storing master ambient sound level data; a controller operatively coupled to the microphone and the memory, the controller being configured to compare the sound level signal generated by the microphone to the stored master ambient sound level data to detect a presence of a foreign object proximate said rotatable disk, the controller being further configured to output a signal indicating the presence of a foreign object when the sound level signal does not compare to the stored master ambient sound level data; a gravity-feed coin input tray having a bowl-shaped body with an aperture proximate a bottom of the bowl-shaped body, the bowl-shaped body having an interior surface configured to funnel coins towards the aperture, the aperture discharging coins onto the rotatable disk; a hood disposed over the aperture in the bowl-shaped body, the hood being spaced from the interior surface of the bowl-shaped body, the hood being moveable from a first position, wherein the hood is disposed over the aperture, to a second position, wherein the hood is upwardly rotated away from the aperture; and a switch configured to detect the position of the hood, wherein the controller is operatively coupled to the switch to thereby monitor the position of the hood. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18)

26. A method for detecting the presence of foreign objects in a coin processing machine, the method comprising the acts of:

receiving, in a coin input area of the coin processing machine, a plurality of coins to be processed; counting said received coins using a coin processing module comprising at least one coin sensor; and monitoring using a microphone, subsequent to completion of said act of counting said plurality of coins, a sound level within the coin processing module to detect sound generated by solid foreign objects within the coin processing module following a lapse of a predetermined amount of time after no coins have been sensed by a coin processing module coin sensor.

27. A method for detecting foreign objects in a coin processing machine, the method comprising the acts:

receiving, in a coin input area of the coin processing machine, a plurality of coins to be processed; totaling a value of said received coins using a coin processing module comprising at least one coin sensor; and monitoring using a microphone the coin processing module for the presence of a solid foreign object within the coin processing module subsequent to completion of said act of totaling, said completion being defined by a lapse of a predetermined amount of time after no coins have been sensed by a coin processing module coin sensor.

a coin input area configured to receive a plurality of coins from a user; a rotatable disk including a resilient pad configured to impart motion to the received plurality of coins; a sorting head having a lower surface generally parallel to and spaced slightly from said resilient pad of said disk, said lower surface of said sorting head forming a plurality of coin exit channels configured to sort and discharge coins of different denominations; at least one microphone disposed proximate the rotatable disk, the at least one microphone being configured to detect sound around the rotatable disk and to generate a sound level signal indicative of said detected sound; at least one coin sensor disposed along a coin path to sense coins; a memory storing master ambient sound level data for the coin processing module; and

35. A method for detecting the presence of foreign objects in a coin processing system, the method comprising the acts of:

receiving a plurality of coins to be processed from a user in a coin input area of a coin processing machine; processing said received coins with a coin processing module of the coin processing machine; determining, using a controller, whether all of said received coins have been processed; monitoring using a microphone, subsequent to processing of all of said received coins, a sound level within the coin processing module to detect sound generated by solid foreign objects within the coin processing module, and outputting a foreign object detection signal corresponding to the detected foreign object, wherein said act of determining comprises monitoring an output of a coin sensor disposed in a coin path. - View Dependent Claims (36, 37, 38, 39)

a coin input area for receiving a plurality of coins from a user and outputting said coins into a coin hopper; a rotatable disk including a resilient pad for imparting motion to the received plurality of coins; a sorting head having a lower surface generally parallel to and spaced slightly from said resilient upper surface of said disk, said lower surface of said sorting head forming a plurality of coin exit channels for sorting and discharging coins of different denominations; at least one microphone disposed proximate the rotatable disk for detecting sound around the rotatable disk and for generating a sound level signal indicative of said detected sound; at least one coin sensor disposed along a coin path to sense coins; a vacuum system having an inlet disposed in said coin hopper to remove foreign objects from the coin hopper; a memory storing master ambient sound level data for the coin processing module; and a controller electronically coupled to the microphone and the memory, the controller being configured to, following a lapse of a predetermined amount of time after no coins have been sensed by the at least one coin sensor, compare the sound level signal generated by the microphone to the stored master ambient sound level data to detect a presence of a solid foreign object proximate said rotatable disk and output a foreign object detection signal relating to the comparison when the sound level signal exceeds a predetermined foreign object threshold. - View Dependent Claims (41)
