1. A photoactivation device for modulating the physiology of a target biological activity by directing a photoactivating beam of light having a predetermined set of photoactivating light parameters on a target surface, said device comprising:

  • a treatment head defining a central head section and a pair of laterally disposed lateral head sections, said central head section and each of said lateral head sections comprising rows of corresponding substantially elongated photoactivating light sources, in substantially side-by-side and contiguous relationships relative to each other, and emitting said photoactivating beam of light;

    wherein said photoactivating beam of light is a pulsed photoactivating beam of light having a target irradiance of at least about 10 mW/cm2 and at most about 1000 mW/cm2 and configured to be pulsed according to a pulsing scheme stimulating collagen production in said target, said target irradiance being substantially constant throughout a lighting range over which said target is illuminated;

    said treatment head further comprising;

    a positioning element operatively coupled to said photoactivating light sources for allowing selective positioning of said photoactivating light sources relative to said target surface; and

    a position evaluating element for evaluating the position of said photoactivating light sources relative to said target surface, by allowing for an evaluation of the distance between said photoactivating light sources and said target surface, said position evaluating element comprising;

    a non-contacting distance probe light source projecting a probe light ray along a projection optical axis towards said target surface; and

    a non-contacting distance probe target sensor sensing said probe light ray traveling along a target sensor optical axis once said probe light ray has been reflected by said target surface;

    wherein said distance probe light source and said distance probe target sensor are configured, sized and positioned so that said projection optical axis and said target sensor optical axis are angled relative to each other and intercept each other on said target surface substantially only when said target surface is spaced from said photoactivating light sources by a predetermined target-to-photoactivating light source spacing distance; and

    wherein, according to the position of said photoactivating light sources relative to said target surface evaluated with said position evaluating element, said positioning element is operable to selectively position said photoactivating light sources relative to said target surface to achieve a predetermined operational characteristic of said photoactivating light sources resulting in said target irradiance; and

    an information providing element for providing information regarding the position of said photoactivating light sources relative to said target surface, said information providing element including a visual display component for providing a visual display indicative of the position of said photoactivating light sources relative to said target surface.
