Time-slotted data packets with a preamble
First Claim
1. A method for transmitting payload data, the method comprising:
- allocating a single time-slot of at least one shared channel to carry a signal to a receiver on an as-needed basis, the signal including a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion includes control information for a plurality of receivers and wherein the second portion includes a plurality of payload data for the plurality of receivers;
modulating the second portion using a modulation type;
indicating, in the first portion of the signal, the modulation type used to modulate the second portion, and to which of the plurality of receivers the payload data is directed; and
transmitting the signal in the single time-slot.

Abstract
An illustrative embodiment of the present invention supports the transmission of data to a user on an as-needed basis over multiple allocated data channels. Data packets are transmitted in time-slots of the allocated data channels to corresponding target receivers without the need for explicitly assigning particular time-slots to a target user well in advance of transmitting any data packets in the time-slots. Instead, each data packet transmitted in a time-slot includes a header label or preamble indicating to which of multiple possible receivers a data packet is directed. The preamble also preferably includes decoding information indicating how a corresponding data payload of the data packet is to be processed for recapturing transmitted raw data.

8. A method for receiving payload data on one or more shared channels, the method comprising:
-
receiving, at an access unit, a signal in a single time-slot of at least one shared channel, wherein the received signal includes a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion includes control information for a plurality of receivers and wherein the second portion includes a plurality of payload data for the plurality of receivers; monitoring the first portion of the received signal to determine to which receiver of multiple possible receivers sharing the at least one shared channel that each of the plurality of payload data is directed, wherein the first portion indicates a modulation type of the payload; and demodulating the payload data of the received signal using a modulation type indicated in the front portion of the received signal. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13)

14. An access unit comprising:
-
a transceiver configured to receive a signal in a single time slot of at least one shared channel, the received signal including a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion includes control information for a plurality of receivers and wherein the second portion includes a plurality of payload data for the plurality of receivers; and a processor configured to monitor the first portion of the received signal to determine to which receiver of the plurality of receivers sharing the at least one shared channel that each of the plurality of payload data is directed, and wherein the processor is further configured to demodulate the payload data of the received signal using a modulation type indicated in the first portion of the received signal. - View Dependent Claims (15, 16, 17, 18)
