Abstract

A method for calibrating a phase locked loop begins by determining a gain offset of a voltage controlled oscillator of the phase locked loop. The processing then continues by adjusting current of a charge pump of the phase locked loop based on the gain offset.

Claims

1. A radio transmitter comprising:

a translational loop operable to receive a baseband/low IF signal and to up-convert the baseband/low IF signal to produce a Radio Frequency (RF) signal; and

a calibration module coupled to the translational loop and operable to perform open loop calibration on the translational loop by;

disconnecting a feed forward path of the translational loop at a disconnection point;

applying an open-loop control voltage to a first component of the translational loop at the disconnection point;

determining an open loop gain offset of the translational loop while applying the open-loop control voltage; and

applying the open loop gain offset to a second component of the translational loop.

2. The radio transmitter of claim 1, wherein the first component of the translational loop comprises a loop filter.

3. The radio transmitter of claim 2, wherein the second component of the translational loop comprises a charge pump.

4. The radio transceiver of claim 3, wherein the calibration module is operable to determine the gain offset by:

measuring a control voltage of the output of the loop filter when a reference oscillation is input to the translational loop to produce a first measured control voltage;

injecting a frequency offset into the translational loop;

measuring the control voltage of the voltage controlled oscillator to produce a second measured control voltage; and

determining the gain offset based on the frequency offset, the first measured control voltage and the second measured control voltage.

5. The radio transceiver of claim 4, wherein the calibration module is further operable to wait for expiration of a settling period after injecting the frequency offset before measuring the control voltage.

6. The radio transceiver of claim 4, wherein the calibration module is further operable to:

inject a second frequency offset into the translational loop;

measure the control voltage of the voltage controlled oscillator to produce a third measured control voltage; and

determine the gain offset based on the frequency offset, the second frequency offset, the first measured control voltage, the second measured control voltage, and the third measured control voltage.

7. The radio transceiver of claim 6, wherein the calibration module is further operable to wait for expiration of a settling period after injecting the second frequency offset before measuring the control voltage.

8. The radio transmitter of claim 1, wherein the calibration module comprises:

an analog to digital converter having an analog input coupled to an output to the first component of the translational loop and a digital output; and

a digital processing module having an input coupled to the digital output of the analog to digital converter, operable to produce the gain input based upon the input, and an output operable to produce the open loop gain offset.

9. The radio transmitter of claim 1, further comprising a digital transmitter processing module operable to produce the baseband/low IF signal based upon output data.

10. The radio transmitter of claim 1, further comprising:

a power amplifier coupled to an output of the translational loop; and

an antenna coupled to the output of the power amplifier.

11. The radio transceiver of claim 1, wherein the modulated baseband signal comprises at least one of:

a frequency shift keying modulated signal;

a phase shift keying modulated signal; and

a magnitude shift keying modulated signal.
