Abstract

A wireless terminal includes an uplink rate option indicator in the same uplink channel segment with data, the rate option indicator providing transmission rate information about the data transmitted in the segment. The indicator value is represented by an energy pattern within the segment. Different energy patterns correspond to different indicator values. The number of indicator values is less than the number of possible uplink data rate options supported by the wireless terminal. A single indicator value represents different uplink data rate options, at different times, as a function of a received maximum data rate option and/or type of assignment message. The maximum data rate option and/or assignment message was transmitted by the same base station receiving the indicator value; therefore, there is no ambiguity between wireless terminal and base station as to the interpretation of the uplink data rate option indicator value with respect to an individual uplink segment.

Claims

1. A method comprising operating a wireless terminal to perform the following:

identifying a predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols in an uplink channel segment corresponding to uplink rate option information to be communicated in said uplink channel segment, different predetermined subsets of OFDM tone symbols corresponding to different uplink rate option information;

transmitting data in said uplink channel segment; and

indicating, via the placement of energy on tone symbols, in the uplink channel segment which includes said data, uplink rate option information by transmitting on tone symbols corresponding to said identified subset of tone symbols at an increased power level relative to tone symbols not in said identified predetermined subset, said uplink rate option information providing information about the transmission rate of data transmitted in said uplink channel segment.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said uplink rate option information includes an indicator value, the method further comprising operating said wireless terminal to perform the following, prior to performing said transmitting:

determining the indicator value from a maximum rate option value and a selected rate option.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein transmitting data includes transmitting data on at least some tone symbols included in said identified predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein determining the indicator value includes:

determining a mapping from the selected rate option to the indicator value using a first function when said maximum rate option value is in a first set of values and using a second function, which is different from said first function, when said maximum rate option value is in a second set of values which is different from said first set.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the first function is also a function of a type of assignment corresponding to an assignment used to assign the uplink channel segment.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the indicator value is one of N possible values and wherein the total number of rate options supported by said wireless terminal is greater than N, where N is a positive integer greater than 1.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein N is equal to 7 and the total number of rate options supported by said wireless terminal is 8.

8. The method of claim 2, wherein said included indicator value is represented by an energy pattern within said segment, said energy pattern communicating the indicator value.

9. The method of claim 2, wherein indicating in the uplink channel segment uplink rate option information includes encoding a rate option indicator value as coded bits which are transmitted as symbol constellation values within said channel segment.

The method of claim 8, wherein the uplink segment includes a plurality of transmission units, the indicator value being one of N possible indicator values, each of the N possible indicator values corresponding to a different subset of transmission units in said segment, said indicator value being communicated by applying a higher power scale factor to the subset of transmission units in said segment corresponding to the indicator value to be communicated, wherein N is a positive integer greater than 1.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein each of said N different subsets of transmission units are non-overlapping with each transmission unit corresponding to at most one of said N different subsets.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein said included indicator value is represented by an energy pattern within said segment, said energy pattern communicating the indicator value.

16. The method of claim 2, wherein indicating in the uplink channel segment uplink rate option information includes encoding a rate option indicator value as coded bits which are transmitted as symbol constellation values within said channel segment.

34. The method of claim 1, wherein said different predetermined subsets of OFDM tone symbols are mutually exclusive such that the OFDM tone symbols of a predetermined subset are not part of any other one of the predetermined subsets.

12. A method comprising operating a wireless terminal to perform the following:

transmitting data in an uplink channel segment;

indicating, in the uplink channel segment which includes said data, uplink rate option information, said uplink rate option information providing transmission rate information about the data transmitted in said segment; and

wherein the uplink channel segment includes a plurality of tone-halfslots, each tone-halfslot including a predetermined number of temporally consecutive tone-symbols corresponding to the same tone, the tone-halfslots having a predetermined tone-halfslot index order within the segment, each tone half-slot being identified by a tone-halfslot index value k, each tone-symbol within a tone-halfslot being identified by a relative tone-symbol index j, the equation j=MOD (k+X, m) identifying tone-symbols within the tone-halfslots which belong to the subset of tone-symbols, corresponding to the one of the N indicator values, one tone-symbol in each tone-halfslot corresponding to the indicator value being communicated, where X is the indicator value being communicated and X is an integer in the range 0 to m−

1;

where j is an integer value in the range 0 to m−

1; and

k is an integer value in the range of 0 to the total number of tone-halfslots in the segment minus 1, where m is a positive integer greater than 4, and where MOD indicates a modulo function.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein m =7.

14. A method comprising operating a wireless terminal to perform the following:

transmitting data in an uplink channel segment;

indicating, in the uplink channel segment which includes said data, uplink rate option information, said uplink rate option information providing transmission rate information about the data transmitted in said segment; and

wherein the uplink channel segment includes a plurality of tone-halfslots, each tone-halfslot including a predetermined number of temporally consecutive tone-symbols corresponding to the same tone, the tone-halfslots having a predetermined tone-halfslot index order within the segment, each tone half-slot being identified by a tone-halfslot index value k, each tone-symbol within a tone-halfslot being identified by a relative tone-symbol index j, the equation j=MOD (k−

X, m) identifying tone-symbols within the tone-halfslots which belong to the subset of tone-symbols, corresponding to the one of the N indicator values, one tone-symbol in each tone-halfslot corresponding to the indicator value being communicated, where X is the indicator value being communicated and X is an integer in the range 0 to m−

1;

where j is an integer value in the range 0 to m−

1; and

k is an integer value in the range of 0 to the total number of tone-halfslots in the segment minus 1, where m is a positive integer greater than 4, and where MOD indicates a modulo function.

17. A wireless terminal which uses uplink transmission segments, individual uplink transmission segments including a fixed number of uplink transmission units, different uplink transmission segments having the same or different fixed numbers of uplink transmission units, the wireless terminal comprising:

an encoder for generating coded bits at a coding rate corresponding to an uplink rate option, said coded bits being generated from data bits to be transmitted;

a modulator for modulating the coded bits into modulation symbols using a modulation method corresponding to said uplink rate option;

a rate option indicator module for identifying a predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols in an uplink channel segment corresponding to uplink rate option information to be communicated in said uplink channel segment, different predetermined subsets of OFDM tone symbols corresponding to different uplink rate option information; and

a transmission module for transmitting data on OFDM tone symbols in said uplink channel segment and for indicating via the placement of energy on tone symbols in said uplink segment, uplink rate option information, said transmission module transmitting on tone symbols corresponding to said identified subset of tone symbols at an increased power level relative to tone symbols not in said identified predetermined subset, said uplink rate option information providing information about the transmission rate of data transmitted in said segment.

18. The wireless terminal of claim 17, further comprising:

a determination module for determining an indicator value from a maximum rate option value and a selected rate option, said indicator value being used by said rate option indicator module to identify said predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols.

19. The wireless terminal of claim 17, wherein in transmitting said data, said transmission module transmits data on at least some tone symbols included in said identified predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols.

20. The wireless terminal of claim 18, wherein said determination module includes:

a mapping module which maps the selected rate option to the indicator value using a first function when said maximum rate option value is in a first set of values and using a second function, which is different from said first function, when said maximum rate option value is in a second set of values which is different from said first set.

21. The wireless terminal of claim 20, wherein the indicator value is one of N possible values and wherein the total number of rate options supported by said wireless terminal is greater than N, where N is a positive integer greater than 1.

22. The wireless terminal of claim 18, wherein said rate option indicator module includes a scaling module for scaling at least some modulation symbols as a function of said indicator value to produce an energy pattern within said segment, said energy pattern communicating the indicator value.

The wireless terminal of claim 22, wherein the indicator value is one of N possible indicator values, each of the N possible indicator values corresponding to a different one of the predetermines subsets of OFDM tone symbols in said segment, each OFDM tone symbol corresponding to a modulation symbol to be communicated in said segment, said indicator value being communicated by said scaling module applying a higher power scale factor to the modulation symbols corresponding to the identified predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols where N is positive integer greater than one.

24. The wireless terminal of claim 23, wherein each of said N different predetermined subsets of OFDM tone symbols are non-overlapping with each OFDM tone symbol in said segment corresponding to at most one of said N different predetermined subsets.

The wireless terminal of claim 24, wherein the uplink transmission segment includes a plurality of tone-halfslots, each tone-halfslot including a predetermined number of temporally consecutive tone-symbols corresponding to the same tone, the tone-halfslots having a predetermined tone-halfslot index order within the segment, each tone half-slot being identified by a tone-halfslot index value k, each tone-symbol within a tone-halfslot being identified by a relative tone-symbol index j, the equation j=MOD (k+X, m) identifying tone-symbols within the tone-halfslots which belong to the subset of tone-symbols, corresponding to the one of the N indicator values, one tone-symbol in each tone-halfslot corresponding to the indicator value being communicated, where X is the indicator value being communicated and X is an integer in the range 0 to m−

1;

where j is an integer value in the range 0 to m−

1;

k is an integer value in the range of 0 to the total number of tone-halfslots in the segment minus 1, m is greater than 4, and where MOD indicates a modulo function.

26. The wireless terminal of claim 25 wherein m=7.

27. The wireless terminal of claim 17, wherein said rate option indicator module generates said indication of said uplink rate option by controlling an energy pattern within said uplink transmission segment, said energy pattern communicating the indicator value.

28. The wireless terminal of claim 18, wherein said rate option indicator module generates said indication of said uplink rate option by including coded bits, indicating said rate option indicator value, which are transmitted as symbol constellation values within said channel segment.

29. A wireless terminal which uses uplink transmission segments, individual uplink transmission segments including a fixed number of uplink transmission units, different uplink transmission segments having the same or different fixed numbers of uplink transmission units, the wireless terminal comprising:

means for generating coded bits at a coding rate corresponding to an uplink rate option, said coded bits being generated from data bits to be transmitted;

means for modulating the coded bits into modulation symbols using a modulation method corresponding to said uplink rate option;

means for identifying a predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols in an uplink channel segment corresponding to unlink rate option information to be communicated in said uplink channel segment, different predetermined subsets of OFDM tone symbols corresponding to different uplink rate option information; and

means for transmitting data on OFDM tone symbols in said uplink channel segment and for indicating via the placement of energy on tone symbols in said uplink segment, uplink rate option information, said means for transmitting transmit on tone symbols corresponding to said identified subset of tone symbols at an increased power level relative to tone symbols not in said identified predetermined subset, said uplink rate option information providing information about the transmission rate of data transmitted in said segment.

30. The wireless terminal of claim 29, further comprising:

means for determining an indicator value from a maximum rate option value and a selected rate option, said indicator value being used by said means for generating an indication of the uplink rate option to identify said predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols.

31. The wireless terminal of claim 29, wherein said means for transmitting transmit data on at least some tone symbols included in said identified predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols.

32. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium embodying computer executable instructions, for use in a wireless terminal, said non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising:

instructions for causing at least one computer to identify a predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols in an uplink channel segment corresponding to uplink rate option information to be communicated in said uplink channel segment different predetermined subsets of OFDM tone symbols corresponding to different uplink rate option information;

instructions for causing the at least one computer to transmit data in said uplink channel segment; and

instructions for causing the at least one computer to indicate, via the placement of energy on tone symbols, in the uplink channel segment which includes said data, uplink rate option information by transmitting on tone symbols corresponding to said identified subset of tone symbols at an increased power level relative to tone symbols not in said identified predetermined subset, said uplink rate option information providing information about the transmission rate of data transmitted in said segment.

33. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein said instructions for causing the at least one computer to transmit data include instructions to transmit data on at least some tone symbols included in said identified predetermined subset of OFDM tone symbols.
