Abstract

An optical reader system that includes a plurality of substrates. The substrates have an optically readable code disposed therein and a source light assembly that is configured to illuminate the substrates with a code-reading beam and another beam for detecting another optically readable property of the substrate. The code-reading beam and the other beam form beam spots on the substrates that have different shapes. The system also includes a reader that is configured to receive output signals from the code-reading beam and the other beam when the substrates are illuminated. The output signals from the code-reading beam are indicative of the code.

Claims

1. An optical reader system comprising:

a source light assembly configured to illuminate encoded substrates with a code-reading beam and a fluorescence-excitation beam, the code-reading beam and the fluorescence-excitation beam forming respective beam spots on the substrates, the beam spots having different shapes, the substrates having optically readable codes; and

a reader configured to receive output signals when the code-reading beam is incident upon the substrates and fluorescent signals when the substrates are illuminated by the fluorescence-excitation beam, the output signals from the code-reading beam being indicative of the codes.

2. The system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the beam spots have elliptical shapes.

3. The system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the fluorescent signals are indicative of analytes being selectively bound to probes on corresponding substrates.

4. The system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the beam spot from the fluorescence-excitation beam is shaped so that the fluorescent signals from one substrate do not interfere with fluorescent signals from an adjacent substrate.

5. The system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the substrates have an elongated body extending along a longitudinal axis, the code-reading beam being incident upon the substrates at a non-orthogonal or perpendicular angle with respect to the longitudinal axis.

6. The system in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a holder configured to align the substrates end-to-end.

7. The system in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a holder configured to hold the substrates in stationary positions.

8. The system in accordance with claim 1 further comprising the plurality of substrates, wherein the code from each substrate is formed by a diffraction grating.

9. The system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the beam spot from the code-reading beam has a spot width that extends along a first dimension of the substrate and a spot length that extends along a second dimension of the substrate, the spot length being greater than the spot width.

The system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the beam spot from the fluorescence-excitation beam has a spot width that extends along a first dimension of the substrate and a spot length that extends along a second dimension of the substrate, the spot length being equal to or less than the spot width.

11. The system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the reader includes a code detector and a photodetector, the code detector reading the output signals and the photodetector reading the fluorescent signals.

12. The system in accordance with claim 1 wherein the code-reading and fluorescence-excitation beams are combined into a single beam.

13. The system in accordance with claim 12 wherein the code-reading and fluorescence-excitation beams illuminate the substrates at different times.

14. The system in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a computing system, the computing system receiving data based on the optical signals and the fluorescent signals, the computing system determining the code of each substrate and a level of fluorescence from each substrate.

15. A method of reading codes of encoded substrates, comprising:

illuminating the substrates with a code-reading beam and a fluorescence-excitation beam, the code-reading beam and the fluorescence-excitation beam forming respective beam spots on the substrates, the beam spots having different shapes, the substrates having optically readable codes; and

reading output signals when the code-reading beam is incident upon the substrates and fluorescent signals when the substrates are illuminated, the output signals from the code-reading beam being indicative of the codes.

16. The method in accordance with claim 15 further comprising aligning the substrates along a common longitudinal axis.

17. The method in accordance with claim 15 further comprising:

determining the code of each substrate, the code of each substrate being associated with a chemical probe immobilized on said substrate; and

determining a level of fluorescence for each substrate.

18. An optical reader system comprising:

a plurality of substrates having leading and trailing edges and an optically readable code disposed therebetween;

a holder configured to hold the plurality of substrates along a common longitudinal axis;

a source light assembly configured to illuminate the substrates with a beam of incident light, the beam moving along the common longitudinal axis; and

a reader configured to detect the leading edge of each substrate and determine a position of the substrate with respect to other substrates, the reader also reading output signals provided by the substrates when illuminated, the output signals being indicative of the code.

19. The system in accordance with claim 18 wherein the beam includes a code-reading beam and a fluorescence-excitation beam, the output signals being provided when the code-reading beam is incident upon each substrate, fluorescent signals being provided when the fluorescent-excitation beam is incident upon each substrate.

20. The system in accordance with claim 18 wherein the reader includes an edge trigger diode for detecting the leading edge of each substrate and a code reader from reading the output signals of the substrates.

21. The system in accordance with claim 18, wherein the code for each substrate is formed by a diffraction grating.

22. A method for reading a plurality of encoded substrates, the method comprising:

aligning a plurality of substrates along a common longitudinal axis, each substrate having leading and trailing edges and an optically readable code disposed therebetween;

illuminating the substrates with a beam of incident light, the beam moving along the common longitudinal axis;

detecting the leading edge of each substrate to determine a position of the substrate with respect to other substrates; and

reading output signals provided by the substrates when illuminated, the output signals being indicative of the code.

23. The method in accordance with claim 22 wherein illuminating the substrates with a beam of incident light includes illuminating the substrates with a code-reading beam and a fluorescence-excitation beam, the output signals being provided when the code-reading beam is incident upon each substrate, fluorescent signals being provided when the fluorescence-excitation beam is incident upon each substrate.

24. An optical reader system configured to read a plurality of substrates having leading and trailing edges and an optically readable code disposed therebetween, the reader system comprising:

a holder configured to hold the plurality of substrates along a common longitudinal axis;

a source light assembly configured to illuminate the substrates with a beam of incident light, the beam moving along the common longitudinal axis; and

a reader configured to detect the leading edge of each substrate and determine a position of the substrate with respect to other substrates, the reader also reading output signals provided by the substrates when illuminated, the output signals being indicative of the code.

25. The system in accordance with claim 24 wherein the beam includes a code-reading beam and a fluorescence-excitation beam, the output signals being provided when the code-reading beam is incident upon each substrate, fluorescent signals being provided when the fluorescence-excitation beam is incident upon each substrate.

26. The system in accordance with claim 24 wherein the reader includes an edge trigger diode for detecting the leading edge of each substrate and a code reader from reading the output signals of the substrates.

27. The system in accordance with claim 24 further comprising the plurality of substrates, wherein the code for each substrate is formed by a diffraction grating.
