Abstract

The invention provides low-emissivity stacks being characterized by a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), enhanced aesthetics, mechanical and chemical durability, and a tolerance for tempering or heat strengthening. The invention moreover provides low-emissivity coatings comprising, in order outward from the substrate a first dielectric layer; a first nucleation layer; a first Ag layer; a first barrier layer; a second dielectric layer; a second nucleation layer; a second Ag layer; a second barrier layer; a third dielectric layer; and optionally, a topcoat layer, and methods for depositing such coatings on substrates.

Claims

1. A low-emissivity coating on a substrate, the coating consisting essentially of, in order outward from the substrate:

a) a first dielectric layer;

b) a first nucleation layer;

c) a first Ag layer;

d) a first absorbing barrier layer comprising an oxide of nickel and chromium, wherein the first barrier layer comprises about 15 to 60 atomic percent oxygen;

e) a second dielectric layer;

f) a second nucleation layer;

g) a second Ag layer;

h) a second absorbing barrier layer;

i) a third dielectric layer; and

j) optionally, a topcoat layer

wherein the coating has a visible transmission of less than about 69%.

2. The low-emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein at least one of said first dielectric layer, said second dielectric layer or said third dielectric layer is in sub-stoichiometric state.

3. The low-emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein the second absorbing barrier layer comprises a material selected from the group consisting of a metal, an alloy, a silicide, an absorbing oxide, and a nitride.

4. The low-emissivity coating of claim 3, wherein the second absorbing barrier layer comprises a material selected from the group consisting of Ti, TiN, Si, NiCr, an oxide of Ni and Cr, Cr, Zr, Mo, W, and ZrSi.

5. The low-emissivity coating of claim 4, wherein the second absorbing barrier layer comprises NiCr.

6. The low-emissivity coating of claim 4, wherein the second absorbing barrier layer comprises an oxide of Ni and Cr.

7. The low-emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first or second absorbing barrier layers is capable of lowering transmission of the coating.

8. The low-emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first or second absorbing barrier layers is capable of increasing absorption of the coating.

9. The low emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein the second silver layer is thicker than the first silver layer.

10. The low emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein the first absorbing barrier layer is thicker than the second absorbing barrier layer.

11. The low emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein the ratio of the first silver layer thickness to the second silver layer thickness is about 0.8 to about 1.2.

12. The low emissivity coating of claim 10, wherein the ratio of the first absorbing barrier layer thickness to the second absorbing barrier layer thickness is about 1.2 to about 2.0.

13. The low emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein the first nucleation layer is thicker than the second nucleation layer.

14. The low emissivity coating of claim 13, wherein the ratio of the first nucleation layer thickness to the second nucleation layer thickness is about 1.2 to about 2.0.

15. The low-emissivity coating of claim 14, wherein at least one of the first dielectric layer, the second dielectric layer, and the third dielectric layer comprises a nitride or an oxy-nitride.

16. The low emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein the third dielectric layer has an index of refraction that is lower than both the index of refraction of the second dielectric layer and the index of refraction of the first dielectric layer.

17. The low emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein at least one of said absorbing barrier layers is formed using a 2:

1 oxygen;

kw ratio.

18. The low-emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein each of the first dielectric layer, the second dielectric layer, and the third dielectric layer independently comprises a material selected from an oxide, a nitride, and an oxy-nitride, or a combination thereof.

19. The low-emissivity coating of claim 18, wherein at least one of the first dielectric layer, the second dielectric layer, and the third dielectric layer comprises an oxide.

20. The low-emissivity coating of claim 19, wherein the oxide comprises up to about 20 wt % of an element selected from the group consisting of Al and B.

21. The low-emissivity coating of claim 20, wherein the oxide comprises up to about 10 wt % of an element selected from the group consisting of Al and B.

22. The low-emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein at least one of the nucleation layers comprises an oxide of Zn and Al.

23. The low emissivity coating of claim 1, wherein the substrate is glass.

24. The low-emissivity stack of claim 1, wherein the low-emissivity stack is characterized by a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) that is less than about 0.31.

25. The low-emissivity stack of claim 24, wherein the stack is characterized by a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) that is about 0.22 to about 0.25.

26. The low emissivity stack of claim 24, wherein the stack has a light transmittance of about 42% to about 46%, as measured on an IGU.

27. The low emissivity stack of claim 24, wherein the stack has a light transmittance of about 58% to about 62%, as measured on an IGU.

28. The low emissivity stack of claim 24, wherein the stack has a transmittance color with a negative a* and a negative b*.

29. The low emissivity stack of claim 24, wherein the stack has a transmittance color with a negative a* and a positive b*.

30. The low emissivity stack of claim 1, characterized by a tolerance for tempering or heat strengthening.

31. The low emissivity stack of claim 30, wherein optical qualities of the stack are not degraded following tempering or heat strengthening.

32. An automotive window comprising the low emissivity coating of claim 1.

33. A method of making a low-emissivity stack having a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), said method comprising depositing on a substrate the coating of claim 1.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the depositing comprises magnetron sputtering.

35. A low-emissivity coating on a substrate, the coating consisting essentially of, in order outward from the substrate:

a) a first dielectric layer comprising an oxynitride of Si and Al;

b) a first nucleation layer comprising an oxide of Zn and Al;

c) a first infrared reflecting layer comprising Ag;

d) a first absorbing barrier layer comprising an oxide of Ni and Cr, wherein the first barrier layer comprises about 15-60 atomic percent oxygen;

e) a second dielectric layer comprising an oxynitride of Si and Al;

f) a second nucleation layer comprising an oxide of Zn and Al;

g) a second infrared reflecting layer comprising Ag;

h) a second absorbing barrier layer comprising an oxide of Ni and Cr;

i) a third dielectric layer comprising an oxynitride of Si and Al; and

j) optionally, a topcoat layer

wherein the coating has a visible transmission of less than about 69%.
