1. An apparatus, comprising:

  • a stack of substantially planar battery electrode layers, the stack including a first electrode layer including a first tab and a second electrode layer including a second tab, with the first tab electrically connected to the second tab;

    first and second separator layers sandwiching the first electrode layer, with the edges of the first and second separator layers connected with a welded portion of the first and second separator layers, the welded portion circumscribing one or more non-tabbed edge portions of the first electrode layer defining an opening through which the first tab extends;

    a seal including a film disposed over the opening and connecting the first and second separator layers about the first tab;

    a battery housing including at least one feedthrough aperture;

    a feedthrough conformed and sealed to the feedthrough aperture; and

    electrolyte disposed in the battery housing,wherein the first and second separator layers are each adapted to melt to resist ionic transport at a predetermined melting temperature.
