Abstract

A radio frequency (RF) transceiver device includes a processing module, memory, a baseband processing module, an RF section, an RF bus, and an RF bus controller. The processing module and the memory include an RF bus transceiver. The baseband processing module is coupled to convert outbound data into an outbound symbol stream and to convert an inbound symbol stream into inbound data. The RF section is coupled to convert the outbound symbol stream into an outbound RF signal and to convert an inbound RF signal into the inbound symbol stream. The RF bus controller is coupled to control access to an RF bus for providing the outbound data as an RF bus outbound data signal from the processing module RF bus transceiver or from the memory RF bus transceiver and to control access to the RF bus for providing the inbound data as an RF bus inbound data signal to the processing module RF bus transceiver or to the memory RF bus transceiver.

Claims

1. A radio frequency (RF) transceiver device comprises:

a processing module including a processing module RF bus transceiver;

memory including a memory RF bus transceiver;

a baseband processing module coupled to convert outbound data into an outbound symbol stream and to convert an inbound symbol stream into inbound data;

an RF section coupled to convert the outbound symbol stream into an outbound RF signal and to convert an inbound RF signal into the inbound symbol stream;

an RF bus providing a wireless RF communication path between the processing module RF bus transceiver, the memory RF bus transceiver and at least one of the baseband processing module and the RF section, the wireless RF communication path including one or more of a waveguide communication path, a dielectric communication path and a free-space communication path; and

a RF bus controller coupled to control access to the RF bus for providing the outbound data as an RF bus outbound data signal from the processing module RF bus transceiver or from the memory RF bus transceiver and to control access to the RF bus for providing the inbound data as an RF bus inbound data signal to the processing module RF bus transceiver or to the memory RF bus transceiver.

2. The RF transceiver device of claim 1, wherein the baseband processing module comprises:

a baseband processing module RF bus transceiver coupled to convert the RF bus outbound data signal into the outbound data into and to convert the inbound data into the RF bus inbound data signal.

3. The RF transceiver device of claim 1 further comprises:

the RF section coupled to convert the RF bus outbound data signal into a baseband or near baseband outbound data signal;

the baseband processing module converting the baseband or near baseband outbound data signal into the outbound data;

the baseband processing module converting the inbound data into a baseband or near baseband inbound data signal; and

the RF section converting the baseband or near baseband inbound data signal into the RF bus inbound data signal.

4. The RF transceiver device of claim 3 further comprises:

the baseband processing module coupled to convert the outbound data into the outbound symbol stream in accordance with one or more of a wireless personal area network (WPAN) protocol, a wireless local area network (WLAN) protocol, a cellular telephone voice protocol, a cellular telephone data protocol, an audio broadcast protocol, and a video broadcast protocol; and

the baseband processing module coupled to convert the inbound symbol stream into the inbound data in accordance with the one or more of the WPAN protocol, the WLAN protocol, the cellular telephone voice protocol, the cellular telephone data protocol, the audio broadcast protocol, and the video broadcast protocol.

5. The RF transceiver device of claim 1 further comprises:

the RF bus inbound data signal includes a carrier frequency in a first frequency band;

the RF bus outbound data signal includes a carrier frequency in the first frequency band;

the inbound RF signal includes a carrier frequency in the first frequency band; and

the outbound RF signal includes a carrier frequency in the first frequency band.

6. The RF transceiver device of claim 5, wherein at least one of the processing module and the baseband processing module further functions to:

reserve a portion of an allocation for the inbound RF signal or the outbound RF signal for transmitting the RF bus inbound data signal or for receiving the RF bus outbound data signal.

7. The RF transceiver device of claim 5, wherein at least one of the processing module and the baseband processing module further functions to:

determine a potential overlapping of one of the RF bus inbound data signal and the RF bus outbound data signal with one of the inbound RF signal and the outbound RF signal;

when the potential overlapping is determined;

adjust one of frequency and phase of the one of the RF bus inbound data signal and the RF bus outbound data signal; and

enable blocking of the one of the inbound RF signal and the outbound RF signal for the one of the RF bus inbound data signal and the RF bus outbound data signal.

8. The RF transceiver device of claim 5 further comprises:

the baseband processing module functions to;

combine bits of the outbound data and bits of the inbound data to produce composite data, wherein the bits of the outbound data are least significant bits of the composite data and the bits of the inbound data are most significant bits of the composite data;

encode the composite data to produce encoded data;

interleave the encoded data to produce interleaved data;

map the interleaved data to produce mapped data; and

convert the mapped data from the frequency domain to the time domain to produce a baseband or near baseband composite outbound data signal; and

the RF section coupled to convert the baseband or near baseband composite outbound data signal into a composite outbound RF signal, wherein the composite outbound RF signal includes the outbound RF signal and the RF bus inbound data signal.

9. The RF transceiver device of claim 8, wherein the baseband processing module further functions to:

convert the bits of the outbound data and the bits of the inbound data into the baseband or near baseband composite outbound data signal using one of N-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) and N-PSK (phase shift keying), wherein N equals 2^x, where x equals number of bits of the outbound data and number of bits of the inbound data.

10. The RF transceiver device of claim 1 further comprises:

a peripheral interface module including a peripheral interface RF bus transceiver, wherein the RF bus controller further functions to control access to the RF bus for providing the RF bus outbound data signal from one of the processing module RF bus transceiver, the memory RF bus transceiver, and the peripheral interface RF bus transceiver and to control access to the RF bus for providing the RF bus inbound data signal to one of the processing module RF bus transceiver, the memory RF bus transceiver, and the peripheral interface RF bus transceiver.

11. The RF transceiver device of claim 10, wherein the RF bus controller further functions to:

control access to a peripheral RF bus among a plurality of peripheral circuits, wherein, when granted access, one of the plurality of peripheral circuits provides an inbound RF peripheral data signal to the peripheral interface RF bus transceiver or receives an outbound RF peripheral data signal from the peripheral interface RF bus transceiver.

12. The RF transceiver device of claim 1 further comprises:

a plurality of peripheral circuits, wherein each of the plurality of peripheral circuits includes a peripheral circuit RF bus transceiver, wherein the RF bus controller further functions to control access to the RF bus for providing the RF bus outbound data signal from one of the processing module RF bus transceiver, the memory RF bus transceiver, and an RF bus transceiver of one of the plurality of peripheral devices and to control access to the RF bus for providing the RF bus inbound data signal to one of the processing module RF bus transceiver, the memory RF bus transceiver, and the RF bus transceiver of one of the plurality of peripheral devices.

13. The RF transceiver device of claim 1 further comprises:

the baseband processing module coupled to the RF section via a wireless digital-RF interface.

14. A radio frequency (RF) transceiver integrated circuit (IC) comprises:

a bus structure;

a processing module coupled to the bus structure;

memory coupled to the bus structure;

a baseband processing module coupled to the bus structure, wherein the baseband processing module is coupled to convert outbound data into an outbound symbol stream and to convert an inbound symbol stream into inbound data;

an RF section coupled to convert the outbound symbol stream into an outbound RF signal and to convert an inbound RF signal into the inbound symbol stream;

an RF peripheral interface module including a peripheral RF bus transceiver coupled to an external RF bus that provides a wireless RF communication path between the peripheral RF bus transceiver and a plurality of peripheral circuits of a device containing the RF transceiver integrated circuit, the wireless RF communication path including one or more of a waveguide communication path, a dielectric communication path and a free-space communication path;

a RF bus controller coupled to the bus structure, wherein the RF bus controller controls access to the external RF bus among the plurality of peripheral circuits, wherein, when access is granted, one of the plurality of peripheral circuit is coupled to the bus structure via the external RF bus and the peripheral RF bus transceiver.

15. The RF transceiver IC of claim 14, wherein the RF bus controller comprises:

an RF bus transceiver to support the external RF bus.

16. The RF transceiver IC of claim 14 further comprises:

the RF section coupled to convert an inbound RF peripheral signal into a baseband or near baseband inbound peripheral data signal;

the baseband processing module converting the baseband or near baseband inbound peripheral data signal into inbound peripheral data;

the baseband processing module converting the outbound peripheral data into a baseband or near baseband outbound peripheral data signal; and

the RF section converting the baseband or near baseband outbound peripheral data signal into an outbound RF peripheral signal.

17. The RF transceiver IC of claim 16 further comprises:

the baseband processing module coupled to convert the outbound data into the outbound symbol stream in accordance with one or more of a wireless personal area network (WPAN) protocol, a wireless local area network (WLAN) protocol, a cellular telephone voice protocol, a cellular telephone data protocol, an audio broadcast protocol, and a video broadcast protocol; and

the baseband processing module coupled to convert the inbound symbol stream into the inbound data in accordance with the one or more of the WPAN protocol, the WLAN protocol, the cellular telephone voice protocol, the cellular telephone data protocol, the audio broadcast protocol, and the video broadcast protocol.

18. A radio frequency (RF) transceiver device comprises:

a processing module including a processing module RF bus transceiver;

memory including a memory RF bus transceiver;

a baseband processing module;

an RF section coupled to the baseband processing module, wherein the RF section receives an RF bus outbound data signal containing outbound data from one of the processing module RF bus transceiver and the memory RF bus transceiver and an inbound RF signal containing inbound data as a composite inbound RF signal, wherein the RF section converts the composite inbound RF signal into a baseband or near baseband composite inbound signal; and

an RF bus providing a wireless RF communication path between the processing module RF bus transceiver, the memory RF bus transceiver and the RF section, the wireless RF communication path including one or more of a waveguide communication path, a dielectric communication path and a free-space communication path;

the baseband processing module functions to;

combine bits of the outbound data and bits of the inbound data to produce composite data, wherein the bits of the outbound data are least significant bits of the composite data and the bits of the inbound data are most significant bits of the composite data;

encode the composite data to produce encoded data;

interleave the encoded data to produce interleaved data;

map the interleaved data to produce mapped data; and

convert the mapped data from the frequency domain to the time domain to produce a baseband or near baseband composite outbound signal; and

the RF section coupled to convert the baseband or near baseband composite outbound signal into a composite outbound RF signal for transmission to the processing module RF transceiver or the memory RF transceiver via the RF bus, wherein the composite outbound RF signal includes an outbound RF signal and RF bus inbound data signal.

19. The RF transceiver device of claim 18, wherein the baseband processing module further functions to:

convert the bits of the outbound data and the bits of the inbound data into the baseband or near baseband composite outbound data signal using one of N-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) and N-PSK (phase shift keying), wherein N equals 2^x, where x equals number of bits of the outbound data and number of bits of the inbound data.

20. The RF transceiver device of claim 18 further comprises:

a plurality of peripheral circuits, wherein each of the plurality of peripheral circuits includes a peripheral circuit RF bus transceiver to communicate with at least one of the processing module, the baseband processing module, and the memory.

21. The RF transceiver device of claim 18 further comprises:

the baseband processing module coupled to RF section via a wireless digital-RF interface.
