1. A method of directing downlink data to a mobile station supporting a sleep mode in a broadband wireless access system, the method comprising:

  • receiving, by a base station, a sleep request message from the mobile station;

    allowing the mobile station to enter the sleep mode by transmitting a sleep response message including a sleep identifier (SLPID) to the mobile station; and

    transmitting, by the base station, a traffic indication (MOB-TRF-IND) message when the mobile station'"'"'s periodic ranging is scheduled to start even if there is no downlink data to be transmitted to the mobile station,wherein the traffic indication (MOB-TRF-IND) message includes a format (FMT) field indicating which one of an SLPID bit-map based format and an SLPID based format is used for configuring the traffic indication message, andwherein the traffic indication (MOB-TRF-IND) message further includes the sleep identifier (SLPID) of the mobile station, but not SLPID bit-map, when the SLPID based format is indicated in the format field of the traffic indication (MOB-TRF-IND) message such that the traffic indication (MOB-TRF-IND) message is formatted based only on the SLPID that is allocated by the sleep response message.
