Abstract

A basketball having an outer surface and including a first set of channels formed into the outer surface of the basketball. The basketball further includes a bladder, a carcass and at least one cover panel. The carcass covers the bladder and has an outer surface that defines a second set of channels. The cover panel(s) is positioned over the carcass and over at least one of the channels of the second set of channels. The cover panel(s) generally conforms to the shape of the outer surface of the carcass such that the cover panel defines at least one groove in the outer surface of the basketball corresponding to the channels of the second set of channels. The depth of the groove is greater than or equal to 0.7 mm and less than or equal to 10 mm.

Claims

1. A basketball comprising:

a bladder;

a carcass covering the bladder,

at least two cover panels positioned over the carcass, the basketball having an outer surface defining a first set of channels that form a conventional basketball channel pattern, the conventional basketball channel pattern including first and second great circles intersecting at approximately 90 degree angles at opposite points on the outer surface of the basketball, and an elongate curved channel forming generally the shape of an eight and intersecting the first and second great circles; and

a set of grooves formed into the outer surface of the basketball, the depth of the grooves being greater than or equal to 0.7 mm and less than or equal to 10 mm, the set of grooves forming a second pattern that is different from the conventional basketball channel pattern, at least a portion of the set of grooves being spaced apart from the first set of channels, the basketball being configured for organized, competitive play, the set of grooves configured for receiving a portion of one or more fingertips of a player during use to facilitate shooting, passing and dribbling of the basketball;

wherein the carcass defines a second set of channels, each of the channels of the second set of channels has first and second side edges; and

wherein at least one of the cover panels extends over at least one of the channels of the second set of channels and the first and second side edges of the channel, wherein the at least one cover panel generally conforms to the shape of the outer surface of the carcass such that the at least one of the cover panels defines at least one of the set of grooves in the outer surface of the basketball corresponding to the at least one channel of the second set of channels.

2. The basketball of claim 1, wherein the second set of channels number at least two channels and less or equal to forty channels.

3. The basketball of claim 1, wherein the second set of channels number at least eight channels and less than or equal to twenty-four channels.

4. A basketball having an outer surface and comprising:

a first set of channels formed into the outer surface of the basketball, the first set of channels defining eight cover panel attachment regions and defining a conventional basketball channel pattern, the conventional basketball channel pattern including first and second great circles intersecting at approximately 90 degree angles at opposite points on the outer surface of the basketball, and an elongate curved channel forming generally the shape of an eight and intersecting the first and second great circles;

a bladder;

a carcass covering the bladder, the carcass having an outer surface defining a second set of channels, each of the channels of the second set of channels having first and second side edges, the second set of channels including at least two channels corresponding to each cover panel attachment region of the basketball; and

at least two cover panels positioned over the carcass and at least one of the cover panels extending over at least one of the channels of the second set of channels and the first and second side edges of the channel, the at least one cover panel generally conforming to the shape of the outer surface of the carcass such that at least one of the cover panels defines at least one groove in the outer surface of the basketball corresponding to the at least one channel of the second set of channels.

5. The basketball of claim 4, wherein the basketball is configured for organized, competitive play.

6. The basketball of claim 4 wherein the depth of the at least one groove is greater than or equal to 0.7 mm and less than or equal to 10 mm.

7. The basketball of claim 4 wherein the at least one groove defining a second pattern that is different from and wherein at least a portion of the second pattern is spaced apart from the conventional basketball channel pattern.

8. The basketball of claim 4, wherein the second set of channels number at least two channels and less or equal to forty channels.

9. The basketball of claim 8, wherein the second set of channels number at least eight channels and less than or equal to twenty-four channels.

10. The basketball of claim 4 wherein the second set of channels includes a separate channel associated with each cover panel attachment region of the basketball.

11. The basketball of claim 4 wherein the second set of channels includes at least three channels corresponding to each cover panel attachment region of the basketball.

12. The basketball of claim 4, wherein the width and depth of the at least one groove is sufficiently sized to receive a portion of one or more fingertips of a user.

13. The basketball of claim 4, wherein the depth of the at least one groove is greater than or equal to 0.7 mm and less than or equal to 4 mm, and wherein the width of the at least one groove is greater than or equal to 2 mm and less than or equal to 20 mm.

14. The basketball of claim 4, wherein the second set of channels are configured in a shape selected from the group consisting of a line segment, a curved segment, a circle, a closed curved shape and combinations thereof.

15. The basketball of claim 4, wherein the second set of channels are entirely spaced apart from each other and do not interconnect.

16. A spherical basketball having an outer surface having first and second diametrically opposed reference points, and the basketball comprising:

a bladder;

a carcass covering the bladder, the carcass having an outer surface defining a set of channels, each of the channels having first and second side edges, the set of channels defining at least 24 elongate channel segments arranged such that a plane equally spaced from the first and second diametrically opposed reference points extending through the basketball intersects the 24 elongate channel segments; and

at least two cover panels positioned over the carcass and at least one of the cover panels extending over at least one of the channels of the set of channels and the first and second side edges of the one of the channels, the at least one cover panel generally conforming to the shape of the outer surface of the carcass such that at least one of the cover panels defines at least one groove in the outer surface of the basketball corresponding to the at least one channel of the set of channels, the depth of the grooves being greater than or equal to 0.7 mm and less than or equal to 10 mm, wherein each of the grooves extends generally longitudinally about the outer surface of the basketball in a direction from the first reference point toward the second reference point.
