1. A method of providing session admission control, comprising the steps of:
- allocating bandwidth to accommodate a bandwidth allocation request for an originating realm, the requested bandwidth for use in transmission of packets for a requested type of communication from a source located within the originating realm;
determining if a quality of service associated with said allocated bandwidth is appropriate for transmission of the packets for the requested type of communication;
determining if a quantity of said allocated bandwidth is appropriate for transmission of the packets for the requested type or communication; and
de-allocating said allocated bandwidth if the quality of service or the quantity of said allocated bandwidth is determined not to be appropriate,wherein said step of determining if the quality of service associated with said allocated bandwidth is appropriate further comprises the steps of;
determining a bandwidth quality of said allocated bandwidth by retrieving a quality of service score associated with an originating realm where a said source of said bandwidth allocation request is located; and
determining that the quality of service associated with said allocated bandwidth is appropriate for transmission if said retrieved quality of service score is greater than or equal to a default bandwidth quality level required for transmission of the packets from said source for the requested type of communication.

Abstract
A system and method for providing session admission control are provided. Generally, a source of a communication request and a session director are utilized. The session director allocates bandwidth to accommodate a bandwidth allocation request from the source, ensures that quantity of the allocated bandwidth is appropriate for transmission of multimedia packets from the source to the session director, and ensures that quality of service of the allocated bandwidth is appropriate to provide a flow of the multimedia packets via the allocated bandwidth.

11. A method of providing system admission control, comprising:
-
allocating bandwidth equal to the maximum supported amount of bandwidth for a first packet flow representing a first requested type of communication; determining if the quality of service associated with the allocated bandwidth is appropriate for transmission of the first packet flow; sending a signaling packet containing bandwidth information associated with the first packet flow to a traffic manager if the allocated bandwidth is determined to be of appropriate quality; recomputing the allocated bandwidth to reflect the actual bandwidth utilized by the first packet flow if a positive response is received from the traffic manager, the positive response indicating that transmission of the first packet flow is allowed; and transmitting the first packet flow using the recomputed bandwidth. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

memory; and a processor configured by instructions retrieved from the memory to; allocate bandwidth to accommodate a bandwidth allocation request for an originating realm, the requested bandwidth for use in transmission of packets for a requested type of communication from a source located within the originating realm; determine if a quality of service associated with said allocated bandwidth is appropriate for transmission of the packets for the requested type of communication, by determining a bandwidth quality of said allocated bandwidth by retrieving a quality of service score associated with an originating realm where a said source of said bandwidth allocation request is located, and by determining that the quality of service associated with said allocated bandwidth is appropriate for transmission if said retrieved quality of service score is greater than or equal to a default bandwidth quality level required for transmission of the packets from said source for the requested type of communication; determine if a quantity of said allocated bandwidth is appropriate for transmission of the packets for the requested type or communication; and de-allocate said allocated bandwidth if the quality of service or the quantity of said allocated bandwidth is determined not to be appropriate. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20)
