1. A method for determining a cochlear implant frequency map that associates audio frequencies to electrodes in a multi-electrode array implanted into a user'"'"'s cochlea, the method comprising:

  • applying a first signal of a first frequency and a second signal of a second frequency to electrodes in the multi-electrode array, wherein the first signal has a known harmonic relationship with the second signal;

    shifting the application of the first signal to cause the user to perceive tonal variations of the first signal, wherein the shifting comprises altering a weighting at which the first signal is applied to electrodes in the multi-electrode array;

    allowing the user to select one of the tonal variations that the user perceives as best conforming to the known harmonic relationship; and

    modifying the audio frequencies associated with the electrodes in the frequency map at least in part by using the selected tonal variation.
