1. A method of detecting a target substance in a monitored environment or object, comprising:
- (a) in a training phase, training at least one animal capable of detecting said target substance to execute a particular avoidance action, immediately upon detecting said target substance, in order to avoid a particular adverse stimulus;
(b) in an operational phase, exposing said trained animal to a specimen of said monitored environment or object, and sensing when said animal has executed said particular avoidance action.
