Base station synchronization
First Claim
1. A method for time synchronizing a plurality of base stations in a wireless communication system, comprising:
- sending a synch burst from at least one mastercell, wherein the mastercell has a better time synchronization quality than other cells;
for at least one cell other than the mastercell, measuring a synch burst from at least the mastercell and indicating a timing associated with the synch burst to a radio network controller (RNC), wherein the measuring further comprises sending, by the RNC, a request for a base station time of arrival (BSTOA) value to a cell other than the mastercell, and transmitting the BSTOA value; and
sending, by the RNC, a timing adjustment to the at least one cell other than the mastercell.

Abstract
A method, implemented in a user equipment (UE), of maintaining base station synchronization, comprises receiving a measurement message from a radio network controller (RNC) directing the UE to measure a time difference of arrival (TDOA) between signals transmitted from a first and second base station. The UE receives a transmission from the first and second base stations and measures the TDOA of the transmission from the first and second base station. The UE transmits the measurement of the TDOA of the transmission from the first base station to the first base station, and the measurement of the TDOA of the transmission from the second base station to the second base station.
