1. A system for treating a patient with a wound, the system comprising:

  • (a) a bandage comprising a cover to seal about the wound and define a space above the wound in which a vacuum is to be formed, and a port providing communication with the space,(b) a receptacle positioned at an elevation below the wound, the receptacle comprising a body having an upper portion and a lower portion including a wound exudate-collecting cavity, the upper portion having an inlet port, an outlet port and an air vent in direct communication with the wound exudate-collecting cavity and configured for communication with the surrounding atmosphere, the inlet port being connected to the port of the bandage to receive exudate from the wound,(c) a vacuum source connected to the outlet port of the receptacle, the vacuum source positioned at an elevation vertically higher than the receptacle and being effective to provide a vacuum in the receptacle and in the space and to pull air from the surrounding atmosphere into the wound exudate-collecting cavity of the receptacle through the air vent as wound exudate is received through the inlet port into the wound exudate-collecting cavity of the receptacle, and(d) a housing spaced apart from the receptacle and carrying the vacuum source, the housing not carrying the receptacle.
