1. A computer-implemented method for animating an object, wherein animating the object comprises creating one or more duplicates of the object and animating the one or more duplicates according to a three-dimensional shape from which the one or more duplicates is emitted and a direction in which the one or more duplicates is emitted, the method comprising:

  • presenting a user interface comprising;

    a control area comprising an ellipse;

    a sphere located within the ellipse that represents an emitter;

    a three-dimensional shape located around the sphere that represents an emission range and that has a variable orientation; and

    a virtual trackball located within the ellipse;

    receiving input via the virtual trackball, the input comprising mousing down within the trackball and spinning the trackball in order to change the orientation of the emission range; and

    animating the object based on the received input, wherein animating the object comprises creating one or more duplicates of the object and animating the one or more duplicates of the object.
