Federated multiprotocol communication
First Claim
1. An apparatus within a first wireless system, the apparatus comprising:
- means for coupling to a mobile unit over a first air interface;
means for determining that said mobile unit is within a communication coverage range to an access point of a second wireless system that uses a second air interface, wherein said first and second wireless systems are enabled to provide federated access services to said mobile unit;
means for determining whether said mobile unit is capable of coupling to said access point in a manner to permit a handoff operation to switch an on-going communication session from being carried over said first air interface to being carried over said second air interface via said access point;
means for transmitting, over said first air interface to said mobile unit, means for coupling said mobile unit to said second wireless system in said manner to permit said handoff operation, in response to a determination that said mobile unit is not capable of coupling to said access point in said manner to permit said handoff operation; and
means for selectively initiating said handoff operation to operatively switch said on-going communication session from being carried over said first air interface to being carried over said second air interface in response to a determination that using said second air interface is preferable to using said first air interface.

Abstract
Methods, apparatus, and business techniques are disclosed for use in distributed communication systems comprising a plurality of communication protocols. In one embodiment a first air interface is used to initiate communication between a wireless client and a remote server at least partially using a first wireless access point. The server sends the wireless client a stub of a distributed object. The stub is used to instantiate an object class. The object class defines an interface that the remote client can use to communicate with the remote server using an upper layer interface. The distributed object stub also provides an implementation of a software radio configuration for a set of lower protocol layers in a second air interface. The wireless client can thereby communicate with a second wireless access point using said second air interface protocol. Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are disclosed that focus on toll-tag and electronic-commerce related highway systems, distributed federated wireless access systems, and wide area wireless system capacity augmentation.

4. An article comprising:
a non-transitory computer readable medium having executable software stored thereon executable by one or more processors within a device of a first wireless system to; communicate with a mobile unit over a first air interface; identify that said mobile unit is within a communication coverage range to an access point of a second wireless system that uses a second air interface, wherein said first and second wireless systems are enabled to provide federated access services to said mobile unit; determine whether said mobile unit presently is capable of communicating with said access point over said second air interface in a manner to permit a handoff operation to switch an ongoing voice communication session from being carried over said first air interface to being carried over said second air interface via said access point; in response to a determination that said mobile unit is not capable of communicating with said access point over said second air interface in said manner to permit said handoff operation, transmit to said mobile unit, over said first air interface, said executable software for use by said mobile unit; and in response to a determination that using said second air interface is preferable to using said first air interface, initiate said handoff operation to operatively switch said on-going communication session from being carried over said first air interface to being carried over said second air interface. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6, 7)
