Abstract

A communication method for a communication network includes transmitting first control information for a first frame from a hub to a plurality of user nodes, and receiving first data bursts in the first frame from first and second user nodes according to the first control information. A start of the first frame from the first and second user nodes occurs simultaneously at the hub. The method also includes transmitting second control information, based on demand information received from the first and second nodes, for a second frame from the hub after transmitting the first control information, receiving second data bursts in the second frame according to the second control information, and receiving the second frame at the hub following the first frame.

Claims

1. A communication method for a synchronous communication network including a hub and a plurality of user nodes, each at a different distance from the hub, that communicate with the hub via a satellite, said method comprising:

transmitting first control information for a first frame from the hub to the user nodes;

receiving first data bursts from first and second user nodes in the first frame according to the first control information, a start of the first frame from the first and second user nodes occurs at the hub simultaneously;

transmitting second control information from the hub to the user nodes including second control information identifying portions of the second frame determined based on demand information received from the first and second user nodes; and

receiving second data bursts from the first and second user nodes in the portions of the second frame identified by the second control information, a start of the second frame from the first and second user nodes occurs at the hub simultaneously, and the second frame being received at the hub following the first frame.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the first control information includes a first burst time plan and the second control information includes a second burst time plan, the first burst time plan allocating at least one slot in the first frame to the first and second user nodes, and the second burst time plan allocating at least one slot in the second frame to the first and second user nodes; and

determining the first and second burst time plans based on a quality of service including at least one of a configuration parameter, a rate shaping rule, and a prioritization rule;

the configuration parameter includes at least one of a number of slots per frame, a number of upstream channels per user, and a frame rate;

the rate shaping rule includes at least one of a minimum data rate, a real time data rate, and a committed information rate; and

the prioritization rule includes at least one predetermined sequence of servicing minimum data rate demand, real time data rate demand, and committed information rate demand.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

queuing a plurality of user data segments;

adding a demand field to the user data segments; and

scheduling the user data segments to be transmitted according to the first burst time plan.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

classifying user data packets according to a quality of service;

segmenting the user data packets into payload sized segments; and

sorting the segments based on the quality of service into a plurality of quality of service queues.

5. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

calculating the demand field based on the demand information received from the first and second user nodes; and

attaching the demand field to the user data segments.

6. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

selecting one of the plurality of quality of service queues according to a queuing algorithm;

moving a user data segment from the selected quality of service queue to a transmit queue; and

setting a size of a transmit queue for at least one user node based on a number of slots in the first frame allocated to the at least one user node.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

transmitting a user data segment in a slot in the first frame allocated to the respective user node.

8. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

transmitting at least one of an upstream symbol timing adjustment, an upstream frequency adjustment, and an upstream power adjustment from the hub to at least one user node;

receiving third data bursts in a third frame from the first and second user nodes according to the upstream timing adjustment, the upstream frequency adjustment, or the upstream power adjustment; and

the control information includes an upstream modulation order and a forward error correction order for the first and second user nodes.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

calculating a channel assessment field from at least one of a channel symbol offset, a channel frequency offset, and a channel signal to noise ratio; and

attaching the channel assessment field to at least one of the user data segments.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

stripping the channel assessment field from the at least one user data segment;

storing the channel assessment field in an assessment data structure; and

generating the upstream modulation order and a forward error correction order based on at least one of the assessment data structure and predetermined rules.

11. A wireless communication network comprising:

a hub; and

a plurality of user nodes configured to communicate with the hub via a satellite, the hub including

a processor configured to form a first frame,

a transmitter configured to transmit first control information for the first frame and second control information for a second frame to the user nodes, the second control information identifying portions of the second frame determined based on demand information received from the first and second user nodes, and

a receiver configured to receive first data bursts from first and second user nodes in the first frame according to the first control information, and second data bursts from the first and second user nodes in portions of the second frame determined based on the demand information received from the first and second user nodes, a start of the first frame from the first user node and the second user node occurring simultaneously at the receiver, a start of the second frame from the first user node and the second user node occurring simultaneously at the receiver, and the second frame is received at the receiver following the first frame.

The wireless communication network of claim 11, wherein the first control information includes a first burst time plan and the second control information includes a second burst time plan, the first burst time plan allocating at least one slot in the first frame to the first and second user nodes, and the second burst time plan allocating at least one slot in the second frame to the first and second user nodes;

and

the processor is further configured to determine the first and second burst time plans based on a quality of service including at least one of a configuration parameter, a rate shaping rule, and a prioritization rule;

the configuration parameter includes at least one of a number of slots per frame, a number of upstream channels per user, and a frame rate;

the rate shaping rule includes at least one of a minimum data rate, a real time data rate, and a committed information rate; and

the prioritization rule includes at least one predetermined sequence of servicing minimum data rate demand, real time data rate demand, and committed information rate demand.

13. The wireless communication network of claim 12, wherein:

the first and second user nodes are configured to

queue a plurality of user data segments,

add a demand field to the user data segments, and

schedule the data segments to be transmitted according to the first burst time plan.

14. The wireless communication network of claim 13, wherein:

the first and second user nodes are configured to

classify user data packets according to a quality of service,

segment the user data packets into payload sized segments, and

sort the segments based on the quality of service into a plurality of quality of service queues.

15. The wireless communication network of claim 14, wherein:

the first and second user nodes are configured to

calculate the demand field based on the demand information received from the first and second user nodes, and

attach the demand field to the user data segments.

16. The wireless communication network of claim 13, wherein:

the first and second user nodes are configured to select one of the plurality of quality of service queues according to a queuing algorithm,

move a user data segment from the selected quality of service queue to a transmit queue, and

set a size of a transmit queue for at least one user node to be proportional to a number of slots in the first frame time period allocated to the at least one user node.

17. The wireless communication network of claim 11, wherein:

the transmitter is further configured to transmit at least one of an upstream symbol timing adjustment, an upstream frequency adjustment, and an upstream power adjustment to the user nodes; and

the receiver is further configured to receive third data bursts in a third frame from the first and second user nodes according to the upstream timing adjustment, the upstream frequency adjustment, or the upstream power adjustment; and

the control information includes an upstream modulation order and a forward error correction order for the first and second user nodes.

18. The wireless communication network of claim 11, wherein:

the receiver is further configured to calculate a channel assessment field from at least one of a channel symbol offset, a channel frequency offset, and a channel signal to noise ratio, and attach the channel assessment field to the user data segments.

19. The wireless communication network of claim 18, wherein:

the processor is further configured to strip the channel assessment field from the user data segments, store each channel assessment field in an assessment data structure, and generate the upstream modulation order and a forward error correction order based on the assessment data structure.

20. A hub in a wireless communication network that includes a plurality of user nodes and a satellite, the hub comprising:

a processor configured to form a first frame;

a transmitter configured to transmit first control information for the first frame and second control information for a second frame to the user nodes, the second control information identifying portions of the second frame determined based on demand information received from the first and second user nodes; and

a receiver configured to receive first data bursts from first and second user nodes in the first frame according to the first control information, and second data bursts from the first and second user nodes in portions of the second frame determined based on the demand information received from the first and second user nodes, a start of the first frame from the first user node and the second user node occurring simultaneously at the receiver, a start of the second frame from the first user node and the second user node occurring simultaneously at the receiver, and the second frame is received at the receiver following the first frame.

21. A communication method for a network including a hub and user nodes, said method comprising:

transmitting first control information for a first frame from the hub to the user nodes;

receiving first data bursts from the user nodes in the first frame according to the first control information, a start of the first frame from the user nodes occurs at the hub simultaneously;

transmitting second control information from the hub to the user nodes identifying portions of the second frame determined based on information received from the user nodes; and

receiving second data bursts from the user nodes in the portions of the second frame identified by the second control information, a start of the second frame from the user nodes occurs at the hub simultaneously, and the second frame being received at the hub following the first frame.
