1. An apparatus for forming a fluid-tight seal on an inner wall of a fluid conduit through an aperture therein within a patient'"'"'s body, the apparatus comprising:

  • a central stem having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion;

    a flange radially oriented about and attached to said distal end portion of said central stem and a periphery extending away from a portion of said flange that is attached to said distal end portion of said central stem, said flange configured for selective positioning at a position closely disposed proximally about the central stem with at least a portion of said periphery located proximally of said distal end portion of said central stem, at a position wherein said periphery extends laterally outwardly from the central stem and at a position where at least a portion of said periphery extends distally of the distal end of the central stem;

    a shield radially oriented about and attached to said distal end portion of said central stem substantially overlaying the flange, said shield being positioned proximally of said flange when said flange is positioned laterally outwardly from said central stem; and

    a balloon radially oriented about the central stem and interposed between the shield and the flange, the balloon in deflated condition prior to inflation enabling positioning of the shield and flange proximally about the central stem, and in inflated condition positioning the shield and flange laterally outwardly from the central stem with said balloon being positioned distally of said shield and proximally of said flange, and in deflated condition subsequent to inflation enabling positioning of the flange and shield distally of the distal end of the central stem.wherein said shield is configured to prevent inadvertent puncture of said balloon during suturing of an anastomosis;

    wherein said flange, said shield, and said balloon are configured to be folded inwardly together about the central stem and extended proximally from the central stem to a configuration of sufficiently small cross section to be insertable into an aortic aperture; and

    wherein said flange, said shield, and said balloon are configured to be folded inwardly together about the central stem and extended distally from the central stem to a configuration for removal from said aortic aperture.
