Abstract

The teachings herein disclose methods and apparatus that simplify impairment correlation estimation for received signal processing, based on determining, for any given processing interval, which impairment contributors should be considered in the estimation of overall received signal impairment correlations. These simplifications reduce computational processing requirements, allowing reduced circuit complexity and/or reduced operating power, and improve receiver performance. A corresponding transmitter and transmission method include transmitting multiple information streams to targeted receivers according to ongoing scheduling, and controlling the ongoing scheduling to reduce the number of impairment contributors considered in impairment correlation estimation at the targeted receivers. In one embodiment, a receiver identifies which impairment contributors to consider based on receiving control information. In another embodiment, the receiver identifies the impairment contributors to consider based on background processing, e.g., background determination of parametric model fitting parameters for a plurality of impairment contributors, and observing those model fitting parameters over time.

Claims

1. A method of estimating impairment correlations in a receiver comprising:

representing a plurality of impairment contributors in a generalized expression for impairment correlations;

identifying which fitting parameters in a parametric model of impairment correlations having individual fitting parameters corresponding to the plurality of impairment contributors are of interest in estimating impairment correlations for a received communication signal by determining which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on direct or indirect knowledge of a transmit signal structure used in transmission of the received communication signal; and

estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on the identified impairment contributors.

The method of claim 1, wherein determining which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on direct or indirect knowledge of the transmit signal structure used in transmission of the received communication signal comprises one of identifying which impairment contributors to consider in estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on received control information, or identifying which impairment contributors to consider in estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on impairment correlation measurements made at the receiver.

The method of claim 2, wherein identifying which impairment contributors to consider based on received control information comprises receiving control information that directly or indirectly indicates which impairment contributors should be considered by the receiver in estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal.

The method of claim 2, wherein identifying which impairment contributors to consider based on impairment correlation measurements made at the receiver comprises measuring impairment correlations for a pilot signal received in conjunction with the received communication signal, and determining non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors based on the measured impairment correlations.

The method of claim 4, wherein determining non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors based on the measured impairment correlations comprises fitting the parametric model of impairment correlations to the measured impairment correlations based on calculating values for the fitting parameters of the parametric model, and observing relative or absolute values of the fitting parameters to identify non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors.

The method of claim 1, wherein estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on the identified impairment contributors comprises calculating an overall impairment correlation estimate for the received communication signal in a first time interval as a function of the identified impairment contributors.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising at least one of suppressing interference in the received communication signal based on the overall impairment correlation estimate, or estimating signal quality for the received communication signal based on the overall impairment correlation estimate.

The method of claim 6, wherein determining which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on direct or indirect knowledge of a transmit signal structure used in transmission of the received communication signal comprises performing background impairment correlation calculations over a second time interval longer than the first time interval, to identify non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors for consideration in the overall impairment correlation estimate.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein representing a plurality of impairment contributors in a generalized expression for impairment correlations comprises representing the plurality of impairment contributors in the parametric model of impairment correlations.

The method of claim 9, wherein determining which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on direct or indirect knowledge of a transmit signal structure used in transmission of the received communication signal comprises observing relative or absolute fitting parameter values corresponding to the plurality of impairment contributors represented in the parametric model, to identify non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors.

The method of claim 9, wherein determining which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on direct or indirect knowledge of a transmit signal structure used in transmission of the received communication signal comprises performing model fitting calculations using measured impairment correlations as part of background processing at the receiver, and observing the relative or absolute values of the resultant model fitting parameters over time, to identify non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors.

The method of claim 11, wherein estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on the identified impairment contributors comprises, for a current foreground processing interval at the receiver, generating an overall estimate of impairment correlations for the received communication signal by fitting parametric model terms corresponding to the non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors to measured impairment correlations.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiver comprises a Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) receiver and the received communication signal comprises a MIMO communication signal.

The method of claim 13, wherein determining which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on direct or indirect knowledge of a transmit signal structure used in transmission of the received communication signal comprises determining one or more MIMO transmission parameters for the received communication signal that determine which impairment contributors should be considered in estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising acquiring direct knowledge of the transmit signal structure based on received information.

The method of claim 1, further comprising acquiring indirect knowledge of the transmit signal structure by calculating values for some or all of the fitting parameters in the parametric model of impairment correlations, and evaluating their relative or absolute values over one or more evaluation intervals.

The method of claim 1, wherein determining which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on direct or indirect knowledge of a transmit signal structure used in transmission of the received communication signal comprises, for the case where the transmit signal structure comprises transmitting to one scheduled user at a time, determining that fitting parameters corresponding to other users are not of interest.

The method of claim 1, further comprising, for the case where the transmit signal structure comprises transmitting multiple information streams with equal power, determining that fitting parameters corresponding to the equal-power information streams are like-valued, and using commonly estimated fitting parameter values for the equal-power information streams.

The method of claim 1, wherein identifying the fitting parameters that are of interest comprises selecting particular fitting parameters, or particular groups of fitting parameters, from among the plurality of fitting parameters in the parametric model of impairment correlations based on knowledge of the transmit signal structure used for transmitting the received communication signal.

20. A receiver circuit for estimating impairment correlations in a receiver comprising one or more processing circuits configured to:

represent a plurality of impairment contributors in a generalized expression for impairment correlations;

identify which fitting parameters in a parametric model of impairment correlations having individual fitting parameters corresponding to the plurality of impairment contributors are of interest in estimating impairment correlations for a received communication signal by determining which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on direct or indirect knowledge of a transmit signal structure used in transmission of the received communication signal; and

estimate impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on the identified impairment contributors.

21. The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to determine which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on control information received at the receiver, or based on impairment correlation measurements made at the receiver.

The receiver circuit of claim 21, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to receive control information that directly or indirectly indicates which impairment contributors in the generalized expression to consider in estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal.

The receiver circuit of claim 21, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to measure impairment correlations for a pilot signal received in conjunction with the received communication signal, and to identify which impairment contributors in the generalized expression to consider in estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal by identifying non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors based on the measured impairment correlations.

The receiver circuit of claim 23, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to identify non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors based on the measured impairment correlations by fitting the parametric model of impairment correlations to the measured impairment correlations based on calculating values for the plurality of fitting parameters and observing relative or absolute values of the fitting parameters.

The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to estimate impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on the identified impairment contributors by calculating an overall impairment correlation estimate for the received communication signal in a first time interval as a function of the identified impairment contributors.

26. The receiver circuit of claim 25, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to provide the overall impairment correlation estimate for interference suppression or signal quality determination for the received communication signal.

The receiver circuit of claim 25, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to determine which impairment contributors are non-negligible by performing background impairment correlation calculations over a second time interval longer than the first time interval, to identify non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors.

28. The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to represent the generalized expression for impairment correlations as the parametric model of impairment correlations.

The receiver circuit of claim 28, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to determine which impairment contributors are non-negligible by identifying non-negligible ones in the plurality of impairment contributors based on performing parametric model fitting calculations using measured impairment correlations as part of background processing at the receiver and observing the relative or absolute values of the resultant model fitting parameters over one or more background processing intervals.

The receiver circuit of claim 29, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to estimate impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on the identified impairment contributors by, for a current foreground processing interval at the receiver, generating an overall estimate of impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on fitting parametric model terms corresponding to the non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors to measured impairment correlations.

31. The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein the receiver comprises a Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) receiver and the received communication signal comprises a MIMO communication signal.

The receiver circuit of claim 31, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to determine which impairment contributors are non-negligible by determining one or more MIMO transmission parameters for the received communication signal that determine which impairment contributors in the generalized expression should be considered by the receiver in estimating impairment correlations for the received signal.

The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein the one or more processing circuit comprise a determination circuit configured to determine which impairment contributors are non-negligible, and an estimation circuit configured to estimate overall impairment correlations for the received communication signal based on the identified impairment contributors.

34. The receiver circuit of claim 33, further comprising a combining weight generator configured to generate combining weights for the received communication signal based on the estimate of overall impairment correlations.

35. The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to acquire direct knowledge of the transmit signal structure based on received information.

The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to acquire indirect knowledge of the transmit signal structure by calculating values for some or all of the fitting parameters in the parametric model of impairment correlations, and evaluating their relative or absolute values over one or more evaluation intervals.

The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to determine which impairment contributors are non-negligible based on direct or indirect knowledge of a transmit signal structure used in transmission of the received communication signal by, for the case where the transmit signal structure comprises transmitting to one scheduled user at a time, determining that fitting parameters corresponding to other users are not of interest.

The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein, for the case where the transmit signal structure comprises transmitting multiple information streams with equal power, the one or more processing circuits are configured to determine that fitting parameters corresponding to the equal-power information streams are like-valued, and using commonly estimated fitting parameter values for the equal-power information streams.

The receiver circuit of claim 20, wherein the one or more processing circuits are configured to identify the fitting parameters that are of interest by selecting particular fitting parameters, or particular groups of fitting parameters, from among the plurality of fitting parameters in the parametric model of impairment correlations based on knowledge of the transmit signal structure used for transmitting the received communication signal.

40. A method of estimating impairment correlations in a receiver for a received communication signal, the method comprising:

representing a plurality of impairment contributors in a generalized expression comprising a parametric model having model fitting parameters corresponding to plurality impairment contributors;

dynamically identifying which impairment contributors in the plurality of impairment contributors that are of interest based on inferred or direct knowledge of interference conditions by calculating the model fitting parameters individually or in related subgroups over one or more background processing intervals, based on fitting corresponding model terms in the parametric model to measured impairment correlations and observing the model fitting parameters over the one or more background processing intervals to identify non-negligible ones of the impairment contributors; and

estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal by fitting model terms in the parametric model corresponding to the impairment contributors that are of interest to currently measured impairment correlations.

41. The method of claim 40, further comprising acquiring direct knowledge of interference conditions based on receiving information relating to a transmit signal structure bearing on the interference conditions.

42. The method of claim 40, further comprising acquiring inferred knowledge of interference conditions by evaluating calculated values for some or all of the fitting parameters in the parametric model over one or more evaluation intervals.

43. The method of claim 40, further comprising, from among the fitting parameters corresponding to the impairment contributors that are of interest, identifying one or more groups of like-valued fitting parameters, and estimating such like-valued fitting parameters together.

44. The method of claim 40, wherein estimating impairment correlations for the received communication signal by fitting model terms in the parametric model corresponding to the impairment contributors that are of interest comprises, in a given foreground processing interval, fitting model terms in the parametric model corresponding to the non-negligible impairment contributors to current impairment correlations measurements made for a pilot signal received in conjunction with the received communication signal.

45. The method of claim 40, wherein the received communication signal is a Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication signal, and wherein the receiver is a MIMO receiver.
