A method for controlling a lighting system comprisinga plurality of lighting units, each lighting unit being identified by an identification code, and comprising a lighting source for emitting visible light and a modulated light source for emitting a modulated light configured to carry the identification code,a radiation pattern of the modulated light substantially coinciding with a radiation pattern of the illumination light, the method comprisingsensing, in a viewing area, at least one attribute of the modulated lights emitted by at least two lighting units of the plurality of lighting units,analyzing the modulating lights to produce control data based on the identification code of each of the at least two lighting units and the at least one attribute of each of the modulated lights, andcontrolling the at least two lighting units based on the control data.
