Abstract

A voice web browser system includes a telephone, an access system coupled to a TCP/IP network, a telephone system coupling the telephone to the access system, and a speech-to-text system for “reading” text that had been sent over the TCP/IP network to the telephone user. Preferably, the access system receives TCP/IP packets from web pages accessible over the TCP/IP network and parses the HTML code of the web pages into text and non-text portions, such that the text portion can be read to the telephone user. A computer implemented process for obtaining web page information over a TCP/IP network includes implementing a connection of a telephone user to an access system that is coupled to a TCP/IP network, detecting a selection of at least one navigation command by the telephone user to access a web page accessible over the TCP/IP network, and navigating over the TCP/IP network to the web page in response to the navigation command, resulting in a verbal communication of at least some information derivable from the web page to the telephone user. A method for retrieving e-mail that was sent over a TCP/IP network includes calling from a user telephone to an access computer coupled to a TCP/IP network, providing user identification to the access computer, retrieving e-mail via the access computer that was sent over the TCP/IP network and addressed to the user, and reading the e-mail to the user of the user telephone utilizing a text-to-speech system.

Claims

1. A cellular telephone comprising:

an LCD flat panel visual display;

a digital telephone communication link coupled to a public telephone system and configured to communicate with the Internet such that image information sent as TCP/IP data packets from an HTTP Internet server can be displayed on said visual display in response to inputs originating from said cellular telephone;

another digital communication channel configured to communicate with the Internet such that image information sent as TCP/IP data packets from an HTTP Internet server can be displayed on said visual display in response to inputs originating from said cellular telephone;

an audio output of said cellular telephone capable of playing content sent as TCP/IP data packets from said HTTP Internet server; and

an audio input of said cellular telephone capable of transmission over at least one of said digital telephone communication link and said another digital communication channel;

wherein said image information is sent as a markup language, wherein said markup language comprises HTML code, wherein said image information is displayed on said visual display by processing said HTML, wherein said another digital communication channel is a wireless communication channel, wherein said inputs are accomplished by selecting keys of said cellular telephone and wherein said keys are physical keys.

2. A cellular telephone as recited in claim 1 wherein said audio output of said cellular telephone can also be used for telephone conversations over said public telephone system.

3. A cellular telephone as recited in claim 1 wherein said audio input of said cellular telephone can also be used for telephone conversations over said public telephone system.

4. A cellular telephone as recited in claim 1 wherein said audio output includes voice.

5. A cellular telephone comprising:

a flat panel display;

a cellular telephone communication link capable of wirelessly connecting to a public telephone system for telephonic communication over said public telephone system, said cellular telephone communication link being further configured to communicate with the Internet such that image information sent as TCP/IP data packets from an HTTP Internet server can be displayed on said flat panel display in response to inputs originating from said cellular telephone;

at least one other digital communication channel configured to communicate with the Internet such that image information sent as TCP/IP data packets from an HTTP Internet server can be displayed on said flat panel display in response to inputs originating from said cellular telephone;

an audio output device of said cellular telephone capable of both playing telephonic communications sent over said public telephone system and content sent as TCP/IP data packets from said HTTP Internet server over the Internet; and

an audio input device of said cellular telephone capable of transmission over at least one of said digital telephone communication link and said another digital communication channel;

wherein said in puts are accomplished by selectins keys of said cellular telephone and wherein said keys are physical keys.

6. A cellular telephone as recited in claim 5 wherein said image information comprises HTML code.

7. A cellular telephone as recited in claim 5 wherein said flat panel display is an LCD flat panel display.
