1. A lubricating oil composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and an organic molybdenum complex prepared by a process comprising:

  • (a) reacting an alkylphenol substituted with an alkyl group in the para-position with a formaldehyde source and an N-hydroxyethyl substituted diamine to yield a Mannich base; and

    (b) reacting the Mannich base with molybdenum trioxide to form the organic molybdenum complex,wherein the N-hydroxyethyl substituted diamine is selected from the group consisting of 2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethanol, aminopropyldiethanolamine, and aminoethyldiethanolamine.
