Abstract

Unitary transceiving units employ a multiple carrier, time-division-multiple-access (TDMA), time-division-duplex (TDD protocol to conduct concurrent wireless voice and data communications wherein a first transceiving base station unit tethered to a network interface wirelessly communicates to a second, mobile transceiving unit. The mobile transceiving unit wirelessly transmits and receives packetized voice and data information that is separated and routed to respective voice or data networks. The unitary mobile transceiving unit thus functions as a concurrent voice phone and data communications terminal/computer.

Claims

1. A method, comprising for concurrent wireless voice and data communications between first and second transceiving units, the first transceiving unit tethered to a voice network and to a data network and the second transceiving unit being mobile, the method comprising:

(a) providing plural frequency, time-division-multiple-access/time-division-duplex, channels;

(b) combining and transmitting both voice information and data information on the plural channels, by;

packetizing the voice information into a first dedicated set of time slots within a time frame associated with a first plurality of time frames;

packetizing the data information into a second dedicated set of time slots associated with the first plurality of time frames, a first time slot of the second dedicated set of time slots comprising a forward error correction code shared between the first time slot and a second time slot of the second dedicated set of time slots; and

wherein each time slot of the first and second dedicated sets of time slots has a fixed time slot position for the first plurality of time frames.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the voice information and data information share equal amounts of a first time frame of the first plurality of time frames.

3. The method as recited in claim 2 wherein each of the first dedicated set of time slots changes to a different one of the plural frequency channels after a predetermined number of consecutive time frames.

4. The method as recited in claim 2 wherein the number of plural frequency channels is greater than the number of the first dedicated set of time slots.

5. The method as recited in claim 2 wherein the number of plural frequency channels is less than the first dedicated set of time slots.

6. The method as recited in claim 2 wherein the number of plural frequency channels is equal to the first dedicated set of time slots.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein a the first time slot comprises set of synchronization bits shared between the first time slot and the second time slot of the second dedicated set of synchronization bits.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein step (a) adheres to the Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications standard.

9. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein step (a) complies with Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications standards.

10. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the plural frequency channels operate between 2.4 GHz and 2.5 GHz.

11. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first time slot comprises a set of signaling bits shared between the first time slot and the second time slot of the second dedicated set of time slots.

12. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first time slot comprises a set of cyclic redundancy check bits shared between the first time slot and the second time slot of the second dedicated set of time slots.

13. A unitary transceiving unit comprising:

(a) a transceiver employing multiple frequency time-division-multiple-access time-division-duplex channels that supports concurrent wireless voice and data communications; and

(b) a baseband processor including a CODEC and at least one sub-processor to process audio, generate tones, provide echo canceling, and to program slot and frame timing for the transceiver, the baseband processor configured to;

packetize voice information into a first dedicated set of time slots within a time frame associated with a first plurality of time frames;

packetize data information into a second dedicated set of time slots associated with the first plurality of time frames, a first time slot of the second dedicated set of time slots comprising a forward error correction code shared between the first time slot and a second time slot of the second dedicated set of time slots; and

wherein each time slot of the first and second dedicated sets of time slots has a fixed time slot position for the first plurality of time frames.

14. A unitary transceiving unit as recited in claim 13 wherein and the voice information and data information share equal amounts of a first time frame of the first plurality of time frames.

15. A unitary transceiving unit as recited in claim 13 wherein each of the first dedicated set of time slots has a different one of the multiple frequency channels.

16. A unitary transceiving unit as recited in claim 13 wherein each of the first plurality of time slots changes to a different one of the multiple frequency channels after a predetermined number of consecutive frames.

17. A unitary transceiving unit as recited in claim 13 wherein a first time slot of the second set of dedicated time slots comprises a forward error correction code.

18. A method comprising:

receiving voice information at a first transceiving unit over a first dedicated set of time slots associated with a plurality of time frames of a wireless channel;

receiving data information from the first transceiving unit over a second dedicated set of time slots associated with the plurality of time frames of the wireless channel, a first time slot of the second dedicated set of time slots comprising a forward error correction code shared between the first time slot and a second time slot of the second dedicated set of time slots; and

wherein each time slot of the first and second dedicated sets of time slots has a fixed time slot position for the plurality of time frames.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising changing a carrier frequency of the wireless channel in a pseudo-random manner.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the first dedicated set of time slots is a first number of time slots and the second set of dedicated time slots is a second number, the first number different from the second.
