Abstract

The embodiments disclosed herein include new, more efficient ways to collect product reviews from the Internet, aggregate reviews for the same product, and provide an aggregated review to end users in a searchable format. One aspect of the invention is a graphical user interface on a computer that includes a plurality of portions of reviews for a product and a search input area for entering search terms to search for reviews of the product that contain the search terms.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

at a server having one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs for execution by the one or more processors,

collecting information containing product reviews for a plurality of products, wherein a respective product review provides a critical, subjective evaluation of a corresponding product by a human in electronic form;

automatically extracting product reviews from the collected information;

for at least some of the extracted product reviews, identifying a particular product that is associated with the extracted product review; and

for each particular product in at least a subset of the plurality of products, generating aggregated review information for the particular product based on extracted product reviews that are associated with the particular product;

storing the extracted product reviews and the aggregated review information;

receiving a request from a client for an aggregated review of a product, the aggregated review of the product including portions of extracted product reviews of the product; and

sending the aggregated review of the product in response to the request,

wherein the aggregated review of the product includes a list of server-suggested search terms that are automatically selected from extracted product reviews of the product in accordance with their respective weighted occurrences in the extracted product reviews of the product.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the collecting comprises selectively crawling review-related Web sites or portions thereof and retrieving information containing product reviews.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the collecting comprises receiving product reviews in a predetermined digital format.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the collecting comprises selecting information from a repository of information collected by a web crawler.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises Web pages.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises Web pages of review-related Web sites.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises Web pages of review-related Web sites and product-related Web sites.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises forum postings.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the identifying a particular product that is associated with the extracted product review comprises associating a unique number in the extracted product review with a particular product.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 9, wherein the unique number is a product model number.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 9, wherein the unique number is an ISBN number.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the identifying a particular product that is associated with the extracted product review comprises associating a brand name and a model number in the extracted product review with a particular product.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the identifying a particular product that is associated with the extracted product review comprises associating a brand name, a model number, and a product category in the extracted product review with a particular product.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the aggregated review of the product comprises a total number of reviews for the product.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the aggregated review of the product comprises an average rating for the product.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the aggregated review of the product comprises a distribution of ratings.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the aggregated review of the product includes frequently appearing phrases in the extracted product reviews associated with the particular product.

18. A computer-implemented method comprising:

at a server having one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs for execution by the one or more processors,

collecting product reviews for a plurality of products, wherein a respective product review provides a critical, subjective evaluation of a corresponding product by a human in electronic form;

automatically identifying particular products that are associated with particular product reviews;

for each particular product in at least a subset of the plurality of products, automatically generating aggregated review information for the particular product including frequently appearing phrases in product reviews associated with the particular product;

automatically storing the product reviews and the aggregated review information;

receiving a request from a client for an aggregated review of a product, the aggregated review of the product including portions of extracted product reviews of the product; and

sending the aggregated review of the product in response to the request,

wherein the aggregated review of the product includes a list of server-suggested search terms that are automatically selected from extracted product reviews of the product in accordance with their respective weighted occurrences in the extracted product reviews of the product.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the collecting comprises selectively crawling review-related Web sites or portions thereof and retrieving information containing product reviews.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises Web pages of review-related Web sites.

21. The method of claim 18, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises Web pages of review-related Web sites and product-related Web sites.

22. The method of claim 18, wherein the identifying a particular product that is associated with particular product reviews comprises associating a unique number in the particular product reviews with a particular product.

23. The method of claim 18, wherein the identifying a particular product that is associated with particular product reviews comprises associating a brand name and a model number in the particular product reviews with a particular product.

24. A system comprising at least one server having one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs for execution by the one or more processors, wherein said at least one server is configured to:

collect product reviews for a plurality of products, wherein a respective product review provides a critical, subjective evaluation of a corresponding product by a human in electronic form;

automatically identify particular products that are associated with particular product reviews;

for each particular product in at least a subset of the plurality of products, automatically generate aggregated review information for the particular product including frequently appearing phrases in the product reviews associated with the particular product;

automatically store the product reviews and the aggregated review information;

receive a request from a client for an aggregated review of a product, the aggregated review of the product including portions of extracted product reviews of the product; and

send the aggregated review of the product in response to the request,

wherein the aggregated review of the product includes a list of server-suggested search terms that are automatically selected from extracted product reviews of the product in accordance with their respective weighted occurrences in the extracted product reviews of the product.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the at least one server is configured to selectively crawl review-related Web sites or portions thereof and retrieve information containing product reviews.

26. The system of claim 24, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises Web pages of review-related Web sites.

27. The system of claim 24, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises Web pages of review-related Web sites and product-related Web sites.

28. The system of claim 24, wherein the at least one server is configured to automatically identify a particular product that is associated with particular product reviews by associating a unique number in the particular product reviews with a particular product.

29. The system of claim 24, wherein the at least one server is configured to automatically identify a particular product that is associated with particular product reviews by associating a brand name and a model number in the particular product reviews with a particular product.

30. A non-transitory machine readable storage medium having stored thereon data representing sequences of instructions, which when executed by a server, cause the server to:

collect product reviews for a plurality of products, wherein a respective product review provides a critical, subjective evaluation of a corresponding product by a human in electronic form;

automatically identify particular products that are associated with particular product reviews;

for each particular product in at least a subset of the plurality of products, automatically generate aggregated review information for the particular product including frequently appearing phrases in the product reviews associated with the particular product;

automatically store the product reviews and the aggregated review information;

receive a request from a client for an aggregated review of a product, the aggregated review of the product including portions of extracted product reviews of the product;

and

send the aggregated review of the product in response to the request,

wherein the aggregated review of the product includes a list of server-suggested search terms that are automatically selected from extracted product reviews of the product in accordance with their respective weighted occurrences in the extracted product reviews of the product.

31. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the at least one server is configured to selectively crawl review-related Web sites or portions thereof and retrieve information containing product reviews.

32. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises Web pages of review-related Web sites.

33. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the information containing product reviews comprises Web pages of review-related Web sites and product-related Web sites.

34. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the data representing sequences of instructions include instructions that when executed by the server cause the server to automatically identify a particular product that is associated with particular product reviews by associating a unique number in the particular product reviews with a particular product.

35. The non-transitory machine readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein the data representing sequences of instructions include instructions that when executed by the server cause the server to automatically identify a particular product that is associated with particular product reviews by associating a brand name and a model number in the particular product reviews with a particular product.

36. A system, comprising:

one or more central processing units to execute programs;

memory; and

one or more programs, stored in the memory and executed by the one or more processing units;

wherein the one or more programs include;

means for collecting product reviews for a plurality of products, wherein a respective product review provides a critical, subjective evaluation of a corresponding product by a human in electronic form;

means for automatically identifying particular products that are associated with particular product reviews;

for each particular product in at least a subset of the plurality of products, means for automatically generating aggregated review information for the particular product including frequently appearing phrases in the product reviews associated with the particular product;

means for automatically storing the product reviews and the aggregated review information;

means for receiving a request from a client for an aggregated review of a product, the aggregated review of the product including portions of extracted product reviews of the product; and

means for sending the aggregated review of the product in response to the request,

wherein the aggregated review of the product includes a list of server-suggested search terms that are automatically selected from extracted product reviews of the product in accordance with their respective weighted occurrences in the extracted product reviews of the product.

37. A system comprising at least one server having one or more processors and memory storing one or more programs for execution by the one or more processors, wherein said at least one server is configured to:

collect information containing product reviews for a plurality of products, wherein a respective product review provides a critical, subjective evaluation of a corresponding product by a human in electronic form;

automatically extract product reviews from the collected information;

for at least some of the extracted product reviews, identify a particular product that is associated with the extracted product review; and

for each particular product in at least a subset of the plurality of products, generate aggregated review information for the particular product based on extracted product reviews that are associated with the particular product;

store the extracted product reviews and the aggregated review information;

receive a request from a client for an aggregated review of a product, the aggregated review of the product including portions of extracted product reviews of the product; and

send the aggregated review of the product in response to the request,

wherein the aggregated review of the product includes a list of server-suggested search terms that are automatically selected from extracted product reviews of the product in accordance with their respective weighted occurrences in the extracted product reviews of the product.

38. A non-transitory machine readable storage medium having stored thereon data representing sequences of instructions, which when executed by a server, cause the server to:

collect information containing product reviews for a plurality of products, wherein a respective product review provides a critical, subjective evaluation of a corresponding product by a human in electronic form;

automatically extract product reviews from the collected information;

for at least some of the extracted product reviews, identify a particular product that is associated with the extracted product review;

for each particular product in at least a subset of the plurality of products, generate aggregated review information for the particular product based on extracted product reviews that are associated with the particular product;

store the extracted product reviews and the aggregated review information;

receive a request from a client for an aggregated review of a product, the aggregated review of the product including portions of extracted product reviews of the product; and

send the aggregated review of the product in response to the request,

wherein the aggregated review of the product includes a list of server-suggested search terms that are automatically selected from extracted product reviews of the product in accordance with their respective weighted occurrences in the extracted product reviews of the product.
