1. A femoral trial and cutting guide assembly, comprising:
- (a) a femoral trial component comprising a distal side and a proximal side, two condylar regions, each condylar region having a curved articulating surface, wherein the condylar regions are separated by an opening, the opening defining a central portion with an anterior-most portion and opening side edges comprising orientation slots;
(b) a removable cutting guide adapted to be received by the opening, guided by the orientation slots, and secured such that it extends distally from the distal side of the femoral trial component, but is removable from the distal side in use, and(c) a connection system configured to secure the removable cutting guide to the femoral trial component in a fixed position in the opening of the femoral trial component and to prevent the removable cutting guide from moving with respect to the femoral trial component when connected, wherein the connection system limits the anterior/posterior movement of the removable cutting guide once positioned.

Abstract
Various embodiment of the present invention provide a distal femoral trial that allows a surgeon to cut the central box geometry of a distal femur using an implant-shaped trial. The trial includes a cutting guide that is removable from the trial and adjustable with respect to the trial. The guide is intended to control the depth and direction of the cutting instruments used to prepare the femur for the a posterior stabilized implant.

26. A femoral trial and cutting guide assembly, comprising:
-
(a) a femoral trial component comprising two condylar regions, each condylar region having a curved articulating surface, wherein the condylar regions are separated by an opening, the opening defining a central portion with an anterior-most portion and opening side edges comprising orientation slots; and (b) a removable cutting guide comprising an anterior abutment member, the removable cutting guide adapted to be received by the opening of the femoral trial component, guided by the orientation slots, and secured in a fixed position in the opening of the femoral component by cooperation between the anterior-most portion of the femoral trial component and the anterior abutment member of the removable cutting guide, whereby the cooperation between the anterior-most portion of the femoral trial component and the anterior abutment member of the removable cutting guide prevents the removable cutting guide from moving with respect to the femoral component and limits the anterior/posterior movement of the removable cutting guide.
