Abstract

Cables including a plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors, a separator disposed among the plurality of twisted pairs so as to physically separate a first twisted pair from a second twisted pair, and a jacket surrounding the plurality of twisted pairs and the separator. The jacket may include a plurality of protrusions extending away from an inner circumferential surface of the jacket toward a center of the cable. The plurality of protrusions are configured so as to hold the plurality of twisted pairs away from the inner circumferential surface of the jacket, and may provide an air gap between the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors and the inner circumferential surface of the jacket.

Claims

1. A high speed data communications cable consisting essentially of:

a plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors including a first twisted pair and a second twisted pair, each twisted pair comprising two insulated conductors helically twisted together;

a non-conductive separator disposed among the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors so as to physically separate the first twisted pair from the second twisted pair, the separator comprising a plurality of fins extending radially outward from a central portion of the separator, the plurality of fins defining a plurality of channels within which the plurality of twisted pairs are individually disposed; and

a jacket surrounding the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors, the jacket having a substantially circular cross-sectional shape;

wherein the jacket comprises a plurality of protrusions extending away from an inner circumferential surface of the jacket, and wherein the plurality of protrusions cause the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors to be kept away from the inner circumferential surface of the jacket.

2. The high speed data communications cable of claim 1, wherein the protrusions extend generally toward a center of the cable.

3. The high speed data communications cable of claim 1, wherein the protrusions have a sufficiently small protrusion-to-protrusion spacing so as to prevent any one of the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors from lying between adjacent protrusions.

4. The high speed data communications cable of claim 1, wherein the plurality of twisted pairs consists of four twisted pairs of insulated conductors.

5. The high speed data communications cable of claim 4, wherein plurality of fins consists of four fins defining four channels within which the four twisted pairs are individually disposed.

6. The high speed data communications cable of claim 1, wherein each protrusion of the plurality of protrusions comprises:

a base integral with the jacket;

first and second sides extending away from the base; and

an end side extending from the first side to the second side, the end side being at an opposite end of the first and second sides from the base.

7. The high speed data communications cable of claim 6, wherein each protrusion has a substantially rectangular shape.

8. The high speed data communications cable of claim 1, wherein the protrusions are similarly sized.

9. A high speed data communications cable comprising:

a plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors including a first twisted pair and a second twisted pair, each twisted pair comprising two insulated conductors helically twisted together;

a non-conductive separator disposed among the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors so as to physically separate the first twisted pair from the second twisted pair; and

a jacket surrounding the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors, the jacket having a substantially circular cross-sectional shape;

wherein the jacket comprises a plurality of protrusions extending away from an inner circumferential surface of the jacket, each protrusion having a first side, a second side, and a third side that joins the first and second sides at an opposite end of the first and second sides from the inner circumferential surface of the jacket, and wherein the plurality of protrusions cause the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors to be kept away from the inner circumferential surface of the jacket.

The high speed data communications cable of claim 9, wherein the non-conductive separator comprises a plurality of fins extending radially outward from a central portion of the separator, the plurality of fins defining a plurality of channels within which the plurality of twisted pairs are individually disposed.

11. The high speed data communications cable of claim 10, wherein the plurality of twisted pairs consists of four twisted pairs;

and

wherein the plurality of fins consists of four fins that define four channels within which the four twisted pairs are individually disposed.

12. The high speed data communications cable of claim 9, wherein each protrusion has a substantially rectangular shape.

13. The high speed data communications cable of claim 12, wherein the protrusions are substantially the same size.

14. The high speed data communications cable of claim 9, wherein the protrusions extend generally toward a center of the cable.

15. The high speed data communications cable of claim 9, wherein the non-conductive separator comprises one of solid flame retardant polyolefin and foamed flame retardant polyolefin.

16. The high speed data communications cable of claim 9, wherein the non-conductive separator comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of:

a solid low dielectric constant fluoropolymer, a foamed fluoropolymer, solid polyvinyl chloride, and foamed polyvinyl chloride.

17. The high speed data communications cable of claim 9, wherein the non-conductive separator comprises a substantially flat tape.

18. A high speed data communications cable consisting essentially of:

four twisted pairs of insulated conductors including a first twisted pair and a second twisted pair;

a separator disposed among the four twisted pairs of insulated conductors so as to physically separate the first twisted pair from the second twisted pair; and

a jacket surrounding the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors, the jacket having substantially circular cross-sectional shape;

wherein the jacket comprises a plurality of protrusions extending away from an inner circumferential surface of the jacket, and wherein the plurality of protrusions provides an air gap between the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors and the inner circumferential surface of the jacket; and

wherein each protrusion of the plurality of protrusions has a substantially rectangular shape.

19. The cable of claim 18, wherein the protrusions are sufficiently closely spaced together so as to provide the air gap and so as to prevent any one of the plurality of twisted pairs of insulated conductors from lying between adjacent ones of the plurality of protrusions.
