1. An expansion member for sequential insertion into a space between opposing tissue surfaces to be distracted, comprising:

  • an elongated body having an upper surface and an opposite lower surface;

    at least one locking surface extending transversely between said upper surface and said lower surface; and

    at least one resilient prong defined in and projecting outwardly beyond one of said upper surface and said lower surface, wherein said at least one prong is oriented such that when two of said expansion members are immediately adjacent and substantially co-extensive at least a portion of said at least one prong of one expansion member is disposed in contact against said locking surface of the other expansion member.
