1. A lighting fixture comprising:

  • at least one light emitting diode operable to generate and radiate blue excitation light of wavelength 420 nm to 470 nm;

    a shade located remotely to the at least one light emitting diode and configured to at least in part surround the at least one light emitting diode to thereby prevent at least in part direct viewing of the at least one light emitting diode, wherein the shade is configured such that excitation light travels in free-space a distance of at least one centimeter from the light emitting diode to the shade; and

    at least one phosphor incorporated in a light transmissive flexible sheet and the sheet inserted inside or applied to the shade, wherein the phosphor emits light of a different wavelength in response to incident excitation light, and wherein the combined light from the light emitting diode and the phosphor generate a desired color of light that appears white in color to the eye.
