Drill head for a microtunnelling apparatus
First Claim
1. A drill head comprising:
- a drill head main body including a front end and a back end, the back end configured to be connected to a drill rod, the drill head main body including a rear outer shell having a first end positioned at the back end of the drill head main body and a second end positioned at an intermediate location between the front and back ends of the drill head main body, the drill head main body also including a rear end plate mounted to the first end of the rear outer shell and a support structure mounted to the second end of the rear outer shell, the support structure extending forwardly from the second end of the rear outer shell;
a shaft bearing mounted to the support structure;
a drive shaft that extends through the drill head main body generally from the rear end plate to the front end of the drill head main body, the drive shaft having a front end adapted for connection to a cutting unit, the drive shaft being rotatably supported within the support structure by the shaft bearing;
a steering shell mounted over the support structure; and
a steering shell driving arrangement incorporated into the support structure for generating relative radial movement between the steering shell and the support structure.

Abstract
The present disclosure relates to a drill head having a drill head main body including a front end portion and a back end portion. The back end portion is configured to be connected to a drill rod. A steering shell is mounted over the front end portion. A drive shaft extends through the back end portion and the front end portion of the drill head main body. The drive shaft has a front end adapted for connection to a cutting unit and the drive shaft is rotatably supported within a bearing at the front end portion of the drill head main body. A steering shell driving arrangement is incorporated into the front end portion of the drill head main body for generating relative radial movement between the steering shell and the drill head main body.

19. A drill head comprising:
-
a drill head main body including a front end portion and a back end portion, the back end portion being configured to be connected to a drill rod; a drive shaft that extends through the back end portion and the front end portion of the drill head main body, the drive shaft having a front end adapted for connection to a cutting unit, the drive shaft being rotatably supported within the front end portion of the drill head main body; a steering shell mounted over the front end portion of the drill head main body; the front end portion of the drill head main body including a steering module having a central opening through which the drive shaft extends, the drive shaft defining a central axis that extends lengthwise through the drive shaft, the steering module including an outer surface that extends at least partially around the central axis and opposes an inner surface of the steering shell, the steering module defining a plurality of piston cylinders that extend outwardly with respect to the central axis; the drill head defining a vacuum passage that extends through the drill head in a back-to-front direction for use in evacuating cuttings from behind the cutting unit; the drill head defining a laser sighting passage that extends through the drill head in the back-to-front direction for allowing a steering laser to be directed through the drill head; the vacuum passage and the laser sighting passage extending through the steering module at locations between the piston cylinders; a laser target positioned within the drill head at a location forward of the steering module, the laser target being aligned with the laser passage; and a plurality of pistons mounted within the piston cylinders for generating relative radial movement between the steering shell and the steering module.
