1. A method of determining optical characteristics of a dental object, the method comprising:

  • applying a barrier to a tip of a probe;

    providing a reference object with known optical properties;

    measuring the optical properties of the reference object with the probe;

    storing the measured optical properties of the reference object;

    measuring first optical properties of a calibration block with the probe;

    generating a first set of calibration data corresponding to the known and measured optical properties of the reference object, and the measured first optical properties of the calibration block;

    measuring second optical properties of the calibration block with the probe;

    comparing the measured second optical properties of the calibration block with the first set of calibration data to generate a second set of calibration data;

    measuring the optical properties of the dental object with the calibrated probe; and

    calibrating the measured optical properties of the dental object according to the second set of calibration data.
